Bringing silver screen to life at Dance Limerick

Bringing silver screen to life at Dance Limerick

A social occasion: Philippa Donnellan, CoisCéim

DANCE Limerick and CoisCéim Broadreach have announced details of a new performance project for people over 50.

The organisations have teamed up for Here’s Looking at You, Kid, which draws inspiration from famous movies to encourage participants to create their own stories in dance, bringing to life some of the magic, movement and mayhem of the silver screen.

Led by choreographer Philippa Donnellan, the project takes place at Dance Limerick in April and May, beginning with a free taster dance workshop on Thursday, March 10 at 2pm and culminating with an informal performance and social event on Sunday, May 15.

“As part of our remit, Dance Limerick runs classes for all ages, from tots to adults, but we wanted to design a programme specifically tailored towards involving older people in dance,” said Jenny Traynor of Dance Limerick.

“We’re really fortunate to be able to partner with CoisCéim Broadreach on this project and to work with Philippa Donnellan, who has considerable experience and will encourage people to tap into their creativity.”

Philippa explained that the sessions will be “a social occasion, so over a cuppa there’ll be time to chat with others about favourite films and scenes, hopefully inspiring each other to invent new choreography. Ideas could come from the exuberant Billy Elliot, the stylish Cabaret or the legendary Singin’ in the Rain.

“We can’t wait to see what people suggest,” she added.
