A VIDEO by a student presidential candidate in the University of Limerick has become a YouTube hit, for its parody of the Wolf of Wall Street film.
Fourth year student Tommy Bolger from Carlow town has attracted internet fame - ahead of the student vote - after styling himself as the student version of Jordan Belford, the infamous Wall Street stockbroker.
The film itself starring Leonardo DiCaprio and directed by Martin Scorsese runs to three hours long, but Tommy’s two-minute video has already received over 78,500 views in the space of just three days.
In the video, the engineering and technology education student begins with this introduction: “My name is Tommy Bolger. The year I turned 22 I made €8 an hour, which really pissed me off because I had to eat beans and toast for dinner four days a week.”
The dizzying heights, hedonism and excesses of Wall Street have been replaced with similar, if less energetic scenes of student life, with cocaine being replaced by the powdery sweets DibDabs.
“What can I say? I live the student life. I’m a man of the people, and that’s why I’m running for students’ union president.”
He also mimics Matthew McConaughey’s famous scene, when speaking about the stock trade. “Hey, it’s a fugayzi, fugahzi, it’s a wahzi, it’s a woozie, it’s fairy dust. It doesn’t exist. It’s not real.”
Tommy, however, will be hoping that the student vote in his favour next week will be anything but a fugayzi.
On a more serious note, Tommy said he believes “the union has a lot to offer and not enough people are benefitting from it.” Asked what sets him apart, he said: “Personality. Without a doubt. I’ve great social skills.”
If elected, he plans to have earlier classes on Fridays and reduce the levy for students repeating exams.
His Facebook campaign page has had over 900 ‘likes’ to date.
Voting for all positions in the students’ union takes place this Thursday from 7am to 8pm.
There are two other candidates for UL students’ union president - Lorna Bogue and Mark Nother.
