A SERIES of radio plays created for City of Culture will begin airing this Sunday on Live 95FM.

Voices from the River City, produced by Powerstone Media in association with City of Culture and the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland, is a season of six original half hour radio plays, featuring the cream of Limerick writing and performing talent.

The season will broadcast on consecutive Sundays - starting this Sunday at 7.30am - on Live 95FM with Ciarda Tobin’s, The Gift, with subsequent works to follow by Sean O’Doherty, Pat O’Connor, Mike Finn, Marie Boylan and Paul Meade.

The brainchild of Brian Kelly - producer and director - who worked on a radio play with Pat Shortt for RTE last year, where he got the idea for this series, he said that the writers had to be aware that it was a “different medium” writing for radio.

“In some ways it is a bit of a cliché, but they do say that in some ways radio has the best pictures, because it is left in the imagination of the listener,” he said at the launch this week.

“You have to understand that and take into account technical things like voices, how people see it, differentiating the voices - so there were some technical things, but ultimately you are driven by the story.”

City of Culture director Mike Fitzpatrick said that the “radio play was a staple for many of us growing up and the opportunity to give a rebirth of sorts to this art form locally is something we are very proud of”.
