Sporting Limerick to the fore again
THE passion and pride of Sporting Limerick is very much in evidence this week with the international soccer team playing a high profile friendly match against Australia at Thomond Park – many people's idea of the true home of European rugby – and our county hurlers gearing up for a tilt at Tipperary in Sunday's All-Ireland semi-final in Croke Park.
Giovanni Trapattoni selected his best team to do battle against the Australians and with South Africa due at Thomond on September 9 the critical importance of the rebuilt stadium to the local economy has once again been underlined.
Apart from that, isn't it great for Limerick soccer lovers to have class acts like Robbie Keane and Damien Duff among us? Our hurlers have surprised many by getting to within 70 minutes of another All-Ireland final and even though they are underdogs against Tipperary their fighting qualities could see them through.
With the footballers also distinguishing themselves this summer, the local GAA scene has received a big boost at a time when rugby, in particular, has been making serious inroads throughout the city and county.
The hurlers have got better and better all year and we knowthat when it comes to pride in the jersey they will not be found wanting. Come on Limerick!
