LIMERICK Desmond face an uphill task to qualify from Group C of the Oscar Traynor Trophy after losing 1-0 against Kerry in Mounthawk Park on Sunday.
To have any chance they must win their final group game away to Limerick District in early January and then hope that the match between West Cork and Kerry produces the required result. In the meantime, Limerick District will be away to West Cork on December 11.
The only goal of the game on the resplendent all-weather Mounthawk Park surface came in the 28th minute when a miskick outside his box by goalkeeper Seanie Lynch presented the ball to Kerry striker Adam O’Rourke, who gratefully stroked the ball into the empty net from 28 yards.
In spite of that error, Lynch was the outstanding choice for Man of the Match, as he kept the scoreline down after that with a string of brilliant saves.
Thanks to Lynch’s heroics, Limerick Desmond were in with a chance right until the end and they would have equalised in the 90th minute but for the experienced David Hennessy, who made a super point-blank save from Declan Nash.
There was still hope for a dramatic finish when the rebound broke to Dylan Corrigan but he failed to hit the target.
