Crescent suffer Senior Cup final heartbreak

CRESCENT College Comprehensive’s bid to win a 12th Clayton Hotels Munster Schools Senior Cup title ended in a heartbreaking 9-8 final defeat to CBC, of Cork, at Musgrave Park on Sunday.

Wind-assisted Crescent College looked well placed to regain the Cup after a two-year gap when leading their Cork rivals 8-3 at half-time.

The Crescent College points came courtesy of a try and penalty goal from full-back Daniel Hurley.

Crescent will feel that they should have been further in front at the break, given the scoring opportunities they created.

CBC hit back in the second half and two penalty goals from the boot of out-half James Taylor, the second of which was kicked on the hour mark turned the outcome in the Cork’s students favour.

Crescent College Comprehensive will hope for better luck on Wednesday when the Dooradoyle school take on holders CBC in the Clayton Hotels Munster Schools Junior Cup final at Musgrave Park, 2.30pm.

A minute’s silence was observed before kick-off of Sunday’s Senior Cup final as a mark of respect to Crescent College’s multi Schools Senior Cup winning coach Dudley Herbert who passed away on Saturday. Dudley Herbert also served as Secretary of the Munster Schools Committee in recent times.
