Castletroy College set up an all-Limerick semi-final showdown with Ardscoil Ris in the Munster Schools Junior Cup, thanks to a deserved 21-6 quarter-final win over St Munchin’s College.

A try in either half from hooker Mark O’Mara and powerful number eight David Rowsome paved the way for 2008 Junior Cup winners Castletroy to book their semi-final spot on Tuesday, March 12.

Despite playing into the breeze in the opening half, Castletroy led 10-6 at the break, thanks to O’Mara’s expertly taken try which was created by a terrific surge from Rowsome deep inside the Munchin’s ’22. Castletroy scrum-half Conor Fleming also added five points with a penalty goal and conversion, while St Munchin’s six points came courtesy of two penalty goals from out-half Jason Kiely.

A second penalty goal from scrum-half Fleming stretched Castletroy’s lead to 13-6 six minutes after the restart. The Newtown students made the game safe ten minutes from time when Rowsome bagged his side’s second try, following a smashing break from winger, Sean McBrearty.

With the likes of centres Ronan McDonnell and Colum Carroll, full-back Oisin Kelly, back-row forwards Rowsome, Niall O’Shea and Darragh O’Neill, as well as lock Eoin Hourigan leading the way for Castletroy, the home side made it two wins on the bounce following their earlier success against Glenstal Abbey.
