The Schools Cup Rugby season is upon us again and to mark the occasion the Limerick Leader has a brilliant 12-page supplement in this week’s paper.
We have team pictures of all Limerick schools competing in the senior and junior cup competitions as well as indepth profiles of all the local teams.
Our rugby correspondent Colm Kinsella previews both competitions as Crescent College begin the defence of their senior title and Castletroy College their junior crown.
And as well as looking forward, we also look back. We talk to David Wallace and two of his former team-mates about Crescent’s 1994 senior cup success while Barry Murphy remembers St Munchin’s junior cup win in 1998.
This year’s senior cup begins next Tuesday when Castletroy College travel to Clanwilliam to take on perennial challengers Rockwell in the opening round. On Wednesday, Crescent entertain CBC at St Mary’s RFC grounds in Grove Island while St Munchin’s make the trip to Cork to take on PBC. On Thursday, Ardscoil Ris play Glenstal in Rosbrien.
The junior competition kicks off the following week with two Limerick derbies. Crescent play Ardscoil Ris in Clifford Park on Tuesday, February 4, while on Thursday of that week Castletroy play St Munchin’s in Rosbrien. On Wednesday the two Cork sides meet in Musgrave Park while Rockwell play Glenstal in Clanwilliam.
After the first round of both competitions, there will be a draw for the quarter-finals where the Round 1 winners will have home advantage against one of the Round 1 losers.
The Limerick Leader will continue to provide top coverage right throughout both competitions in print and online.
