Castletroy College made a successful start to the Munster Junior Cup on Tuesday afternoon when they beat Glenstal Abbey 8-5 in Annacotty.

Castletroy laid the foundation for this success in the opening half, after which the Newtown students held a useful 8-0 advantage. A Conor Fleming penalty goal in the 24th minute, and precious try from powerful number eight David Rowsome on the blow of half-time, helped Castletroy gain the upperhand on their opponents.

Glenstal were finally rewarded for their industry and endeavour mid-way through the second period when number eight George O’Hara burrowed his way following a quick tap from a penalty award but they couldn’t score again as Castletroy held on for a hard-earned win.

Castletroy now play the losers of Rockwell and St Munchin’s in the quarter-final and that game is likely to be back in Annacotty again. Glenstal will play the winners of PBC and Crescent.
