FAVOURITES Glenstal Abbey set up a first round clash with Castletroy College in the Munster Schools Senior Cup after easing past a gritty St Clement’s College side 16-5 in their preliminary round clash played on the 4G rugby pitch at UL this Friday.

Glenstal, second favourites to win the Cup with the bookmakers behind market leaders CBC, outscored their Limerick rivals by two tries to one in an entertaining tie played in favourable conditions.

Glenstal Abbey led 8-0 at half-time with out-half Jack Stafford kicking a fifth minute penalty goal and hooker Matthew Ryan crashing over for a well-executed try ten minutes before the break.

The Murroe side increased their advantage seven minutes into the second half when second row Ben Clancy touched down after a barmstorming run of all of 30 metres.

Stafford’s conversion attempt crashed against the crossbar.

A tenacious St Clement’s side gave themselves a glimmer of hope with 20 minutes remaining when prop Daragh Joyce powered over from close range after Steve Ogie was stopped short of the line initially.

However, Glenstal put the issue beyond doubt with a little over 10 minutes remaining when Stafford slotted his second penalty goal of the game.
