Security company ordered to pay a total of €20k to former Limerick employees

A PRIVATE security firm has been ordered to make payments totalling almost €20,000 to eleven security workers who were previously employed at the Dell manufacturing facility in Raheen.
The workers, who are all from the Limerick area initiated proceedings against their former employer - Federal Security Newco Limited - under the provisions of the Minimum Notice and Terms and Conditions Act.
An Employment Appeals Tribunal, which took place at the Castle Oaks Hotel in Castleconnell last month, heard the workers were informed by the company in January 2010 that they were being made redundant as a result of the closure of the computer giant’s manufacturing facility.
However, they only received one week’s notice and the Tribunal found that the workers had not received their statutory entitlements under the terms of the relevant legislation.
As a result, the Tribunal ordered the company to make payments to each of the workers in lieu of the outstanding notice period.
The individual payments, will range from €510.05 to €3,860.
A number of other workers who failed to attend last month’s hearing had their cases dismissed by the Tribunal.
