LOUTH county manager Conn Murray is to head up the new merged city and county authority.

The Government is expected to confirm shortly that the former deputy manager at Limerick City Council is to take charge at City Hall in the coming weeks.

He will oversee the final stages of the merger of City Council and County Council ahead of the merger in 2014, when Limerick will fall under one unitary authority.

Mr Murray also served as manager of Waterford City Council previously.

Southside Labour city councillor Joe Leddin has welcomed the appointment of Conn Murray.

“He brings a wealth of experience to this new position and I understand that he is very much aware of the enormous challenges and indeed opportunities that a unified council can deliver for the people of Limerick,” he said.

Cllr Leddin added: “This appointment now effectively starts the amalgamation process properly and one of the immediate tasks of the new manager will be the creation of a new management team that will be capable and committed to the task of revitalising Limerick. I look forward to meeting with Conn when he arrives in Limerick and outlining to him what actions and policy areas that I believe must be prioritised if Limerick is to compete with other comparable sized Cities both at home and abroad.”
