Limerick councillors to be paid €12,000 for chairman roles
FIVE county councillors will earn an extra €12,000 over the next two years for chairing eight or, at most, ten meetings.
The five were unanimously voted as chairpersons of the council’s five strategic policy committees or SPCs at last Monday’s county council meeting.
The positions carry an annual allowance of €6,000 and this is on top of the normal councillor’s allowance of €16,724 and are taxable.
The five are: Cllr Francis Foley (FF), Social, Cultural and Community Development; Cllr Leo Walsh (FG), Environment; Cllr Tomas Hannon (Labour) Housing; Cllr Stephen Keary, (FG) Planning and Development and Cllr Rose Brennan (FG), Transportation and Infrastructure.
They take over from Cllrs Kevin Sheahan, Mary Jackman, Liam Galvin and Mike Houlihan who have held positions as chair for the past three years while Cllr Hannon continues as chair of the housing SPC.
In the council’s annual report, published this week, it was revealed that the SPCs met just four times in 2011 although the planning SPC met five times.
In total, in 2012, the county’s 28 councillors are in line to receive approximately €1m, made up of a representational allowance, expenses and conference allowances. The total council budget for the year is expected to be €108m.
Last year also, the report reveals, councillors sent representatives to 76 different conference, with representation running from just one councillor to a maximum of eight.
