Ballinacurra Weston demolition programme is welcomed

THE Ballinacurra Weston Resident’s Alliance (BWRA) has welcomed confirmation that up to a dozen more houses are to be demolished in the estate before the end of the year.
A block of four houses at Crecora Avenue was knocked last week and the site levelled and landscaped by contractors acting on behalf of Limerick City Council who took over the regeneration programme in June.
According to Cllr Jim Long there are plans to knock a further 12 houses in Ballincurra Weston before Christmas.
The houses knocked last week had been vacant for some time and, according to local residents, were a significant source of antisocial behaviour.
A number of them were set on fire by vandals and copper piping was also stolen by thieves.
Cathal McCarthy of the BWRA says he is delighted that action is being taken by Limerick City Council.
Members of the BWRA have staged a number of protests in recent months in Ballinacurra Weston and outside City Hall highlighting the situation and calling for the houses to be knocked.
“We are delighted with the progress and with the support we have received from councillors Maurice Quinlivan, Kieran O’Hanlon and Cormac Hurley,” he said.
“The boarded-up houses are not only a source of antisocial behaviour but they are an eyesore and give the entire community a very bad image,” he added.
It is understood that contracts have already been signed for the demolition of a number of vacant houses at Clarina Avenue in the coming weeks.
Negotiations are also continuing with a number of private homeowners in Ballinacurra Weston whose homes are located alongside vacant properties which have been earmarked for demolition.
