LIMERICK FC took another step closer to claiming the Airtricity League Division 1 title thanks to a 1-0 win over SD Galway on Friday night.

A Joe Gamble goal on the stroke of half time was the winning score as Limerick survived being reduced to 10 men following the sending off of Shane Guthrie after 30 minutes. The Galway side also missed a penalty after just seven minutes when Barry Ryan saved Jakub Tominica’s effort.

Waterford’s 4-2 win over Longford Town also on Friday night means Limerick are now four points clear of Waterford with three games remaining and need just six points from their remaining three games.

Longford are now six points behind Pat Scully’s side and it means Limerick can clinch the title in Longford on October 6 in the second last round of games.

Limerick entertain Athlone Town this Friday night in Jackman Park and a win there would mean they would only need one more win from their remaining two games to win the league. Their last game of the season is against Wexford Youths at home on October 13.
