Pike play host to Shamrock Rovers in Hoops battle
LIMERICK Junior soccer side Pike Rovers are set to host Airtricity League Premier Division giants Shamrock Rovers in a ‘Battle of the Hoops’ friendly at Pike Rovers Sportsground this Sunday (2pm).
Pike Rovers are using the game as a key element in the build-up to the new Junior season which begins for the Premier League champions on Thursday, August 16, when they face keen rivals Fairview Rangers.
The fixture holds added significance for Pike as it will mean that the Crossagalla-based side will have played each League of Ireland club at least once during its decorated history.
Shamrock Rovers knocked Limerick FC out of the EA Sports Cup at the semi-final stage at Tallaght Stadium on Bank Holiday Monday night.
Pike Rovers Club Chairman, Pat Dillon said they expected Shamrock Rovers to field a strong side on Sunday despite being in Premier League action against Sligo Rovers the following day.
“We are thrilled that Shamrock Rovers have agreed to play us on Sunday,” Pat Dillon said.
“Our club historian Brian O’Brien was the one who indicated that a fixture against Rovers would mean we have played all the senior clubs in the country, be it in the various competitions or in friendlies. Declan Considine has been instrumental in getting the fixture organised. “
“It should be a great day on Sunday.”
