Soccer: The A team, minus five first team regulars, made the short journey to Solohead last Sunday to play St Nicholas’ in a Division One game. The home team took an early lead and, while Cullen had plenty of possession and forced numerous corners, they failed to test the keeper in the opening half. They did get a deserved equalizer shortly after the resumption, when a Jason O’Brien shot rebounded off the crossbar and was tapped home by Liam Murphy.

This goal prompted an immediate reaction from St Nicholas’ and Ger Ryan had to pull off an exceptional save to prevent them regaining the lead. He could do nothing however a few minutes later when Colin Riordan volleyed an unstoppable shot to the top of the net. St Nicholas continued to press for more goals while relying on a high off-side trap, which eventually led to their undoing, when the speedy Darren Neville raced through to score in the first minute of injury time.

The B team had a good home win over a youthful Clonmel Celtic second string in the Peter O’Reilly Cup. The final score was 3 -2, with Darren McCarthy on the score sheet twice. Next Sunday the A team is away to Rosegreen at 2.30 pm, while the B team entertain Tipperary Town B in Knockane at 11.30 am.

In underage football, the 11s defeated Castle United 6 – 0 with outstanding performances from Adam English and Simon Crehan; the 13s were defeated 3 -2 in Galbally and the 15s played out a scoreless draw in Charleville. Next Saturday the 12 As are at home to Charleville at 11, the 12 Bs are away to Kilmallock at 11 and the 14s are at home to Holycross at 12.30.

All-Star: A member of this year’s All-Star hurling team is Clare’s Conor Ryan, who is a son of Philip, formerly of Gurtakillen, Cullen. Philip played football for the local club and was also a regular on the Tipperary senior football team. Interestingly, the father of another Clare All-Star Conor McGrath, also hails from county Tipperary.

Tidy Towns: Cullen Tidy Towns Committee have organized a fund raising raffle with some great prizes on offer. Tickets, costing €5 each or a book of three for €10 are available at local outlets or from any committee member. The draw will take place in Dawson Bar, Cullen on Saturday, November 30, at 9 pm.

Timber auction: A timber auction will take place in Hannon Park, Lattin, on Sunday, November 24, at 1.30pm.
