RECENT DEATH: Following a protracted battle with illness, Theresa Fitzgerald (nee O’Rourke) of Castlegrey and formerly Ardlahan passed away last weekend. Her wake took place at her home on Monday September 9 and her interment followed Mass at the church of St John the Baptist Kilcornan to the local cemetery. Sympathy is extended to her husband Aiden and their daughters, to the O’Rourke family other relatives and friends. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam .
ANNIVERSARIES: Past members of the community who were remembered in recent church services include Maura, Jeremiah and Ciara Hayes. On Sunday September 15, the noon mass will commemorate Dan McMahon and members of the O’Mahony family.
WELLNESS WORKSHOP: The Limerick Federation of the ICA are holding a full day training session at the Day Care Centre, Drombanna on October 12 from 9.30 am to 5pm. Such sessions are being held countrywide by SOS that is ‘Suicide or Survive’ aimed at promoting good mental health and combating negative and destructive psychological conditions. ORAL HISTORY: West Limerick Resources will be running an Oral History Training Initiative this autumn. Training will consist of two elements. Participants will develop Oral History Interviewing techniques as well as examine the legal and ethical issues relevant to gathering Oral History. The second element of the training will focus on digital voice recording and editing techniques. Training will also explore how oral history can contribute to the local heritage of communities and identify suitable ways of showcasing their research. Training is expected to begin in October and to run one evening per week for 10 weeks. The course is free of charge and open to people living in the West Limerick area. CONGRATULATIONS: A twofold reason for celebration is enjoyed by the Farrelly family of Ballinacarriga whose son Keith recently graduated from UL with a BA Degree in Technology of Education. The new graduand’s second cause for celebration and congratulation is his happy pact with Noreen Mann of Patrickswell to enter into the bonds of matrimony. Noreen is daughter of Liam and Margaret and is employed as Midwife in the Mid-Western Maternity Hospital locally.

HERITAGE TOUR: Knockfierna Heritage Society will hold their annual outing to Cahir Castle, The Swiss Cottage, Rock of Cashel, Holy Cross Abbey on Sunday September 29. GROW YOUR OWN: “ Limerick and Clare Education and Training Board, (formerly County Limerick VEC) are now enrolling for FETAC 3 ‘Grow your own Vegetables ‘ and FETAC 4 ‘Grow your own Fruit ‘courses in West Limerick. Both courses will take place in Ardagh, on Blackhill Organic Farm, and run one day per week from September 2013 to June 2014. Each participant will have the opportunity to learn how to grow a wide range of delicious foods using organic methods with an emphasis on practical skills and an opportunity to gain certification.
