CONFIRMATIONS: Confirmations will be held this Friday and Saturday. The parish will celebrate the sacrament of Confirmation when 146 children from the six Primary schools will receive the sacrament. There will be three ceremonies in all. On Friday afternoon at 4pm in Mary Immaculate Church for the students of St. Senan’ s, St. Tola’s, Gael Scoil Donncha Rua and St. John ‘s. On Saturday morning at 10.30am in SS John and Paul Church for the children of St Aidan’s school and at 2.30pm for St. Conaire’s students.

Please note that due to the Confirmation ceremonies there will be no 7pm mass on Friday in SS John & Paul church or 12 noon mass on Saturday in Mary Immaculate.

KICKBOXING SUCCESS: Congratulations to Josh Vincent who won the IKF cruiserweight title by decision in a gruelling five-round fifth against Billy Kelly of Phoenix Kickboxing Club, Ennis at Shannon Kickboxing’s fight night. The event was held in the Oakwood arms last week and attended by hundreds of spectators.

In the heavyweight division local Mickey O’Neill lost out in his bid to take the 91kg belt from Kilkenny’s Danny Quinn.

Josh is the son of Howie Vincent founder of the Shannon Kickboxing Club. The club was started in 2005. Training is held in Tullyvarraga Hall.

Howie was honoured on the night by receiving the World Kickboxing Association refereeing certificate and being named Irish coach for an upcoming fixture against Wales. The Welsh competition will take place in June. Two Shannon fighters, David Ryan and Leona O’Shea, are on the Irish side. Best of luck to the team.

ATHLETICS: Shannon Athletics club training continues outdoors at the athletics grounds and will continue every Tuesday and Thursday from 5pm to 6pm. New members aged seven and over are welcome and all coaches are fully accredited by Athletics Ireland. It is nice to see the youngsters out training in these bright evenings.

SALE OF WORK: Shannon Apostolic Workers Display Apostolic Worker’s display and Sale of Work will take place in St. Patrick’s Comprehensive School this Sunday 28 April, from 12 noon to 4.30pm. A varied selection of interesting items will be on sale. Please go along and support!

LEGAL CLINIC: The next Free Legal Advice clinic will be held on Monday April 29 at the Community Office, Unit 1, Business Centre from 5.15 to 5.45pm. Please attend at 5.15 to ensure being seen by a solicitor. No appointment is necessary for this service.

EXHIBITION: Don’t forget that Shannon Camera Club is celebrating 36 years of photography with an exhibition of members’ photographs in the foyer of the county Museum in Ennis. There are 46 exhibits from 30 of the club’s members. The exhibition will continue until May 3.

Shannon Camera Club meets on Monday nights (except on Bank holidays) at 7.30pm in the Oakwood Arms from September to May. Further information on the club is available on the website www.shanoncamerclub.com.

LIBRARY: There is a Story time session held every Tuesday afternoon for children aged 3 - 7 years in the Library at 4pm.

TOASTMASTERS: Shannon Toastmasters will meet in the Oakwood Arms Hotel on Wednesday night May 1 at 8pm.

SWIMMING: Parent and toddler/baby swim sessions are held every Saturday morning at 11am in the Shannon pool. Get tips and advice from qualified Lifeguards/Swim Teachers. The cost is €5.75 per adult; children under 2 years are free. For further information contact the centre on 061-361841.

FIRST COMMUNION: Congratulations to the children from both St. Tola’s and Gael Scoil Donncha Rua who celebrated their First Holy Communion day last Saturday.

GOLF CLASSIC: The Tomas McCormaic Annual Cub Golf Classic will take place at Shannon Golf Club on Monday, July 1 this year. The proceeds will go to the Shannon Senior Citizens club to assist them in the extension of their premises. Further details can be had from Councillor Sean McLoughlin on 086 2473712.

GIFT REQUEST: This year the children receiving sacraments of First Communion and Confirmation are being asked to share some of what they receive with children in a Missionary country who are in need. The Sacramental Project for Shannon this year is with the children of Chivhu, Zimbabwe.

DARKNESS INTO LIGHT: The Darkness into Light walk/run will take place again this year in May, a fundraiser for Pieta House. Starting at 4am, and crossing the line just as dawn is breaking, the annual 5km walk/run, is celebrating its 5th year. In Clare join the walk in Lees Road. Registration is available online at dil.pieta.ie. Pre-registration events will take place in Ennis and Limerick over the coming weeks.

PARISH MISSION: The parish is looking for volunteers to help by giving of an hour to help distribute the Invitation and the gift. 72 parishioners are needed who would distribute the Invitation Cards for the Mission to homes in the parish with a gift of the Gospel of Luke. Bishop Kieran will be at a ceremony on Wednesday May 1 at 8pm in Mary Immaculate Church to commission and bless the volunteers.

MISSIONARY: Sr. Rena Condron, a Franciscan Missionary Sister for Africa who worked in Africa for 40 years will speak at all masses in the parish this weekend.

WOLFE TONES: The Academy for five to eight year olds continues each Wednesday at the all-weather pitches from 6pm to 7pm. U-10 hurling training continues each Monday at 5.45pm. U-10 football is at 6pm on Wednesday and U-12 hurling also on Wednesday at 6pm. The U-8 hurlers played in their first blitz on Saturday in Ennis.

ROSE OF TRALEE: Best of luck to Marie Donnellan from Newmarket-on-Fergus who has been chosen to represent Clare in the Rose of Tralee Irish regional finals in June.

SEISIUN: The Shannon branch of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann with Club na Sionna will host their monthly session of music and song in the Old Bar, Wolfe Tones na Sionna on Wednesday at 9.30pm.
