GARDAI are investigating a “very serious incident” concerning an alleged sexual assault on a young girl at a popular nightclub.

According to gardai, a full investigation is under way in relation to the incident which is alleged to have occurred at Club D’Ville in Charleville on Friday night.

It is understood that there were in the region of 1,000 teenagers attending the club which is a popular social spot for students from towns and villages across County Limerick.

The alleged victim is understood to be 15 years of age.

“There is a full investigation under way,” confirmed Supt Pat McCarthy of Mallow garda station this Wednesday.

“We are examining CCTV footage from the club.”

The incident, he said, is alleged to have occurred inside in the nightclub.

“It is a very serious incident. It was a juvenile disco,” continued Supt McCarthy, who is leading the garda investigation.

According to sources, the club was particularly busy on Valentine’s weekend and it was “a full house” on Friday night for the under 18 event. It is understood that the club can accommodate a capacity crowd of 1,200 people.

Gardai have confirmed that no arrests have been made to date.

When details of the allegations came to light, parents took to social media in the early hours of Saturday morning to express their concerns and to find out more in relation to the alleged incident.

A number of parents from Kilmallock and Bruree posted comments shortly after 1am saying they would never allow their child to attend the club again. One mother said she was “furious” and would not be allowing her daughter return to the nightclub, while more expressed relief that their child was not at the disco on Friday night.

Parents also contacted the hotel requesting further information in relation to the alleged incident.

The nightclub, which is located on the grounds of the popular Charleville Park Hotel and Leisure Club, which is located on the main Limerick to Cork road, includes four bars, two dance floors, a VIP Velvet Lounge and an expansive covered smoking area.

The management of the four-star Charleville Park Hotel and Leisure Centre, and the management of BDL Hotels Ireland, which currently operates the hotel, were unavailable for comment at the time of going to press this Wednesday afternoon.
