Refreshments will be provided afterwards in the Courtenay Lodge Hotel, Newcastle West – where we will all get an opportunity to have a chat with our former colleagues and catch up on times past. MENTAL HEALTH NEWS: The West Limerick Branch of the Mental Health Association will resume its monthly meetings at the Maple Lodge, Gortboy, Newcastle West on Tuesday, January 14 at 8pm.

START YOUR OWN BUSINESS: The Enterprise START programme delivered by LIT, and the new Red Door Business Incubation Centre, Newcastle West – with the support of West Limerick Resources offers free training and business advice to potential entrepreneurs – to assist them in developing their business ideas. The Programme starts on January 11 and early application is advisable as places are limited due to the high success rate of the programme. It will be run over 6 weeks (every Saturday) and offers a real market-place perspective on what is involved in creating a competitive and sustainable commercial enterprise. GOLF CLUB: The AGM of the Men’s Committee will take place on this Thursday, January 9 at 7pm in the Clubhouse. This will be followed by the AGM of Newcastle West Golf Club at 8 pm – also in the Clubhouse.

EVERYTING & ANYTHING: De-clutter your wardrobe, look under your bed, check out your attic, garage and shed. I’m sure you’ll find items you no longer need and we’ll find home for them. We need clothes and shoes of all shapes and sizes, unwanted gift & unwanted prizes. We also would like some curtains and bedding, or that old china tea-set you got for your wedding. Please take some time to look around the house – we’ll take almost everything – expect your partner or spouse. Many thanks for the amazing support we receive from great people like you for your kind donations and purchases. As a result, we can continue to provide compassionate care and support for people living with long-term or end of life conditions in our residential homes. BAPTISM PREPARATION PROGRAMME: A Baptism Preparation Programme will take place in the Parish Centre at 8 pm on Tuesday, January 28. All parents, with a child to be baptized, must have first attended one of these one-hour baptism programmes. For further information or to book your place: please ring 069-62141.

SAMARITANS: The Samaritans have introduced a new free-to-caller telephone number – 116123, which is being piloted in Limerick City, County and North Tipperary. Because of limited funds, they are asking as many people as possible to distribute details of the number. Please help to spread the word. Thank you.

DESMOND COMPLEX: The first Fun Day of the New Year took place on Wednesday, January 8. Our next Fun Day will take place on Wednesday February 05. We would like to remind people to contact Brendan on (069) 84069 to enable us get a good approximation of numbers. We would also like to remind people about the hospitalities offered by the Desmond Complex. Dinners are available on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays of every week – with music on most days. Groups can also be accommodated but require advance bookings by ringing the office on (069) 62757 during normal working hours. We would like to extend our deepest sympathies to the family of Paddy Ryan who died recently. Paddy was a great supporter of our fun days and always travelled on the various tours both at home and abroad. May he rest in peace.

EMPLOYABILITY SKILLS PROGRAMME: Participants are now being sought for a new Employability Skill Programme which will start this January and run two mornings per week ( Monday & Friday) from 9.30 am to 1pm. The course will cover core modules including Functional Maths, Team-work, Work Experience and a language (tbc). ENCOUNTERS: Encounters – a collection of artwork in the possession of the governments of the Republic and Northern Ireland was officially launched by Clare McGrath, Chairperson of the Office of Public Works, on Friday, December 6. Encounters will be on view from Thursdays to Saturdays between 12.30 and 4 pm, until January 18. It is well worth a visit.

RAINBOWS SUPPORT PROGRAMME FOR CHILDREN: Rainbows is a free support group for children between the ages of 4 to 12 years. It is designed to assist children and youths who are grieving a death, separation, any other painful transition or change in their family. Run by trained volunteers, the programme is not a counseling or therapy service, but is instead, a safe confidential setting, where children can share their grief associated feelings with each other and with trained facilitators. The new progammes will begin in Newcastle West and Abbeyfeale in early 2014, and will run for one hour per week for twelve weeks. TRÓCAIRE: Trócaire’s door-to-door fundraisers are in our area at the moment and are clearly identifiable - wearing a blue branded Trócaire jacket and carrying photo ID. They will be raising awareness of Trócaire’s work and asking people to support Trócaire with a monthly direct debit.

AN ILLUSTRATED HISTORY OF LIMERICK DIOCESE: A new illustrated history of Limerick Diocese has just been produced. As well as giving a history of the diocese – it includes a short history of each parish. Beautifully illustrated, this book is priced at €20 will be on sale as you leave the Church after Mass.

VOLUNTEERS REQUIRED: Volunteers are required for English Language classes in Newcastle West in the New Year. Volunteers do not require any specific qualifications or experience but must be willing to commit to volunteer 1.5 hours per week for an 8-10 week period to support small groups of 3-4 people at a time to develop their English language conversation skills.
