People of the Year Awards: Each year the People of the Year Awards, which are organized by Rehab and shown live on RTE 1 Television, shine a light on some of the many unsung heroes who are living in communities throughout Ireland. Nominations from all over Ireland are now sought to help to identify this year’s award recipients. People who have done something extraordinary, made a real difference or gone above and beyond the call of duty can be nominated. The organizers would also welcome nominations for the specific categories, Young Person of the Year, International Person of the Year, Sports Person of the Year, or Community Group of the Year. The closing date for entries is Friday 14th June. Nominations can be made at www.peopleoftheyear.com or by writing to People of the Year Awards, Rehab, Roslyn Park, Sandymount, and Dublin 4. The Awards will be presented live on RTE 1 Television on Saturday 14th September.

Post Office Savings: People who may have a few euros in their local Post Office or who hold Prize Bonds received bad news over the Bank Holiday weekend from our beloved Government. They announced further cuts to their saving products after recent pressure from our failed banks who demanded a level playing field. The ordinary people of Ireland trust their Post Office and Credit Union where they are made welcome and treated with respect. People are not wanted in our Banks (which are still open) anymore and are directed to a machine to do their business. The staff has no say in the matter as they receive their orders from a higher authority. The elderly customers prefer to conduct their business with a staff member as their computer skills may be limited. The Banks aided by a poor performing Government treat the people who bailed them out with contempt.
