THE Abu Dhabi Rose final was a spectacular event which took place in the Westin Hotel and Golf Resort in Abu Dhabi. The expats which included the Roses and escorts were nearly all graduates of Mary Immaculate College and the University of Limerick. It was like music to my ears to hear Limerick being mentioned over and over again during the on stage interviews.
The winning Rose who is to represent Abu Dhabi is Patrice McGillicuddy a native of Kerry and past pupil of Mary Immaculate College Limerick. She had great support on the night from her mother and sister who arrived from Ireland to cheer her on.
Her next step will be to attend the regional finals in Portlaoise in May and we wish her the very best of luck. I was delighted to have been chairperson of the judging panel on the night. My evening dress for the event was from Sinead’s Boutique in Annacotty, which was greatly admired.
The following morning after the Rose selection we headed to Dubai to attend The Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships as guests of Colm McLoughlin of Dubai Duty Free and his wife Breda. I would love to have seen the Williams sisters in action but I had to settle for Roger Federer and Benjamin Becker instead. How bad!
Being seated so close to the centre court was so exciting. I couldn’t believe I was seeing this man I had watched so often on my telly playing at Wimbledon, in the flesh. His wife Mirka was sitting quite close to me. She is expecting their third child and looked stunning. After all the excitement we headed to the Irish Village for dinner and a nightcap before saying goodbye after a fabulous two weeks in Abu Dhabi and Dubai.
