ALERT SCHEME: After the initial meetings to guage interest in setting up a scheme, a steering committee of twelve has been formed, and the Community Alert Scheme now operates as a subcommittee of the Community Council. Local Gardai and an Inspector, together with representatives from Muintir na Tierna, were also involved with the initiative. Information leaflets and application forms are being distributed house to house, in the hope of signing up as many households as possible. A small cost of 20euro is associated with joining, which will cover the initial set up and purchase and installation of signs, and the text system itself. The system works by members informing the gardai of any suspicious activity in the area, who then contact the text service provider, which in turn alerts all members within the scheme. The immediate benefits of such a scheme are imeasureable, but include crime reduction, a safer community, and improved community relations. Other long term benefits would include providing security advice, radon and carbon monoxide monitoring, and fire safety.
