CARDS: The results of last week’s card game at Monagea Parish Hall were 1st, with ten games, Kathleen O’Gorman and James Cribben. 2nd divided four ways with eight games each – Tom Purcell and Lena Nash, Peter Culhane and Bridget Kenny, Pat Condon and John Upton, Kathleen Phillips and Eileen Sugrue. Table prizes Tess Keating and Catherine wrenne, Paddy and Eileen Lyons, Theresa Hough and Tom O’Callaghan. Raffle Martin Meehan, John Nash, Chrissie Roche and Theresa Hough.

DEATHS: The death took place at Cahermoyle Nursing Home last weekend of Joe Delee from Strand. Joe had been in O’Connell House, Newcastle West for over twelve years before moving to Cahermoyle recently. His remains were removed to Monagea Church on Saturday night with burial in Monagea cemetery on Sunday. Joe is survived by his brother John, nephew Bill, niece Triona, other relatives and friends.

The death also took place last weekend of Kathleen Culhane (nee Reidy) of Killeline. She was predeceased by her husband Michael. Her remains were removed to Monagea church on Sunday evening with burial in Calvery cemetery, Newcastle West on Monday. Kathleen is survived by son Tommy, daughter Brigetta, daughter in law Rena, grandchildren, sister in law, nephews, nieces, relatives and friends.

May they both rest in peace.

HUNT: The 12th annual Abbeyfeale Harriers Hunting Festival is about to start. The first meet of this year’s festival will be held in Monagea. This is the Harriers first visit to the parish. The hunt will meet at Geraldine and Tom’s Pub in Strand at 11am on this Sunday February 9. Two other hunts, The Minerock Harriers from Wexford and the Dungannon Foxhounds from Co Tyrone will also be present. Hunting is on foot and will go along the hills to Barnagh.

SENIOR CITIZENS PARTY: The annual Monagea Senior Citizens Party will be held in Monagea Parish Hall on Sunday February 16th. It is hoped that most of the regular guests will again be present this year. People will be contacted over the next few days. If there is anyone who would like to attend and are not contacted then inform any member of the Parish Council who are the organisers. Transport can also be arranged.

SUNDAY AFTERNOON TEA DANCE: The monthly Sunday Afternoon Tea Dance for February took place at Monagea Parish Hall on Sunday last. Once again there was a big crowd present, in fact the biggest ever. Many thanks to everyone for their attendance. The very popular Dermot Lyons had the floor full for most of the dances. The dance is on the first Sunday of each month so the next one is on Sunday March 2nd.

CLASSES: The weekly Aerobics and fitness class takes place every Tuesday night from 7.30 to 8.30pm in Monagea Parish Hall. Why not come along and have an enjoyable workout at your own pace.

The set dancing classes take place in Monagea Parish Hall every Thursday night from 8.30 to 10.30pm. All levels of dancing are catered for. Refreshments served.

MONAGEA GAA: Monagea GAA club are organising a “night at the dogs” at Limerick Greyhound Stadium on Saturday March 15th. Tickets cost €10 per person or €20 for a family ticket. All club members have tickets for sale now. The club hope to raise as much money as they can from this venture. The cost of running the club is increasing each year and there is also money needed to invest in the field. A bus has been organised for the night which will leave Geraldine & Tom’s Bar, Strand. There are limited place and cost is €25 return trip which included entry to races & race card. To ensure you place please give a deposit to Geraldine or Tom. Your support would be greatly appreciated.

TRAINING: Training commences for all hurlers & footballers from minor to junior this Sunday 9th February in Monagea at 12pm sharp.

LADIES FOOTBALL: Monagea Ladies Football Club are bringing their fund raising clothes collection to an end this week. They would like to thank everyone who have already given clothes. The club will raise valuable funds from the clothes. As well as ladies, gents and children’s clothes they will also accept shoes, bags, belts, curtains and sheets. Items can be dropped to Denise Browne in Strand, Joan O’Callaghan in Ballyshane or Dawn Hennessy in Newcastle West. Arrangements can also be made for collection if you cannot deliver.

LADIES FOOTBALL TRAINING: Training for the senior, minor and U16 ladies football teams begins on Monday February 17th at 7pm in Newcastle West GAA all weather pitch. It is important that as many players as possible should attend as we prepare for the 2014 Championships. A fee of €3 per person is needed to cover the cost of renting the pitch. CEILI: The next Ceili in Halla Tadhg Gaelach, Tournafulla will take place on Friday February 14th. Dancing is from 9pm to 1am to the music of the Stríolán Ceili Band. Refreshments served and everyone welcome.

VALENTINE’S BALL: A Valentines Ball will be held at Woodlands House Hotel, Adare on Friday 21st of February 2014 in aid of Milford Hospice and Pieta House. The night will consist of music in hotel foyer before sitting down to a four course meal with complimentary wine. This will be followed by music to Limerick band Final Touch and disco by DJB. There will be a Raffle on the nigh for a weekend hotel break and numerous other prizes. Tickets cost €50. All welcome.

COMMUNITIES ON LINE: West Limerick Resources will run final Communities on Line course in Newcastle West each Wednesday from February 19 to April 2 (7.30-10pm). The course will show community groups how to develop their own free website and set up a Facebook page. This is a hands-on course. On completion groups will have a fully operational website. All participants must have a sound basic knowledge of computers and be comfortable in the use of the internet, email and simple applications such as Word. Limit 2 people per group. DRAMA WORKSHOPS: West Limerick Resources will be offering a series of drama workshops across the West Limerick area this spring. The short courses will include acting, directing for stage and technical skills. Courses are free of charge and open to anyone living in the West Limerick area.
