Ger McDonnell Cycle Raises Much Needed Funds for Limerick’s Youth: Representatives from the Ger McDonnell Memorial Cycle Committee recently presented Limerick Youth Service with a cheque for almost €15,000 that was raised at this year’s charity cycle.

The charity cycle, which has taken place for the past five years, is dedicated to the memory of Ger McDonnell, the first Irishman to conquer the K2, the world’s second highest peak. Sadly Ger lost his life on the descent.

Accepting the cheque on behalf of Limerick Youth Service, Director, Catherine Kelly Limerick Youth Service, thanked the Committee for choosing Limerick Youth Service. ‘I’d also like to thank the many volunteers and cyclists who supported the cycle from acting as guides on the day to making sandwiches and cycling the 112KM route,’ said Ms. Kelly.

‘It was a Trojan effort from all involved and all at Limerick Youth Service certainly got behind it and made it a memorable day,’ said Ms. Kelly.

Her sentiments were echoed by JJ McDonnell, brother of the late Ger, who praised Limerick Youth Service for their dedication and commitment to the cycle. ‘With 140 cyclists this year’s event exceeded all expectations,’ said Mr. McDonnell, adding he was ‘in awe of the massive support they received from Limerick Youth Service and the wider community.’

‘They (Limerick Youth Service) have certainly set the bar high in terms of next year’s cycle,’ added Mr. McDonnell. In honour of his memory the Ger McDonnell Memorial Cycle is held each year with to raise funds and awareness of a local charity. When asked how is late brother would feel about the cycle, ‘humble’ was JJ McDonnell’s response. ‘Ger died helping others and it’s a fitting tribute that in his memory this cycle is helping others,’ said Mr. McDonnell.
