MOOREABBEY MILERS: The New Year was welcomed in great speed at the Mooreabbey Milers New Year’s Eve Mile Run. A great crowd of runners and walkers turned out to shake off the Christmas excesses and some record breaking times were recorded on the day. Sergiu Ciobanu set a new course record time of 4.28min and Mary Louise Ryan’s time of 5.57min will be a tough one to beat next year! The Club would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Sergiu on his National Cross Country Title and would like to wish him the best of luck in the World Athletics Championships in Russia later this year and we hope he will be back on New Years Eve 2013 to defend his title in Galbally!! We have had a very busy season so far. All our aspiring athletes have been training hard on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and some noteworthy PBs have been registered in the Dungarvan 10, Ballycotton 10 and Mallow 10. This season’s beginners took on a 5K challenge and dedicated themselves to an extra training run which took place on Saturday mornings starting out from Galbally Community Field. The goal was to participate in the Run with Ray 5K Challenge in Clonmel where Jane, Paddy, Michael, Therese, Deirdre & Margaret all ran with great form and registered great times for their first ever 5K event. It’s onwards and upwards now for this group who have set their sights on the Bilbo Ger Mullane Memorial 10K in June. Go neiri an bothar libh! Congratulations to Mooreabbey Milers Stuart Moloney who registered 5th place in the Tipperary County Intermediate Road Championships. On the County Championship front we put forward a strong ladies team for the County Masters event at Ballingarry on Sunday 7th April and were delighted with a Gold Team medal for Trisha Blackburn, Ann Coughlan, Kathryn Hogan and Carol Quish. Individually, Tom Blackburn achieved bronze in his category and all the ladies had podium success in their categories. A busy season lies ahead with members training for the Limerick Marathon in May and many penciling in the Ballyhoura Summer Series which runs from June to September. Preparations are well underway for the Mooreabbey Milers 8K run on Saturday 24th August in Galbally which promises to be a great event as it coincides this year with the Galbally Gathering. Athletics training for Juveniles 8 to 16 years old has recommenced on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 7p.m. to 8p.m. in Galbally Community Field. The aim is to prepare them for the track and field events that commence in May. Training for adults continues on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 7p.m. with an additional Wed evening run penciled in every two weeks where our training will take the road for a variety of distances from 6K upwards. Our training is suitable for all levels of fitness, so if you jog a bit and would like to join some like minded people or maybe you are just starting out on a fitness regime you would be very welcome at Mooreabbey Milers.
