COUNTY CHAMPIONS: Congratulations to the Newcastle West Minor Footballers who defeated Fr Casey’s from Abbeyfeale in the County Final on Sunday last in Newcastle West. This preceded the County Senior Final – where Dromcollogher /Broadford defeated Monaleen to retain the title.
COMMUNITY COUNCIL: The Annual Church Gate Collection will take place on this coming weekend, October 26 and 27. All the money collected is put back into the local community, so please give what you can. The completed projects to-date include: A Town Map, Town Census, Michael Hartnett Bronze Statue, Cailin Deas Bronze Sculpture, Assisting in the Decentralization Project (Revenue Office), Collaborated in the twinning programme with Pelplin in Poland, Regular meetings with the Local Authority and all the agencies, to raise maintenance, cleanliness and repair issues for the town, and many other smaller, but by no means lesser issues. Upcoming projects include: The construction of a MUGA (all weather play area for older children and young teenagers).The production of a 5 year plan for the town – in conjunction with the Chamber of Commerce, and the production of a Newsletter.
NEWCASTLE WEST FILM CLUB: The Cinema Experience returns to Newcastle West on Friday, November 1. Newcastle West Film Club will present ”I Wish”, the story of a family separated by divorce, but not by love. The two sons set out with a plan to reunite their family. It starts at 8pm in The Desmond Complex (rear of fire station). It costs €7 per screening, with refreshments available – back again on December 6. BABY MASSAGE: West Limerick Resources will be running baby massage classes in Newcastle West – starting Thursday, November 7, and running each Thursday from 10.30 to 11.30am – finishing on November 28. Baby Massage is a great gift, it creates a bond between you and your baby, and can assist in the recovery from post natal depression. It also helps to reduce discomforts like colic and wind. It helps soothe baby and aid sleep pattern. Open to parents and babies (aged 6 weeks to walking stage). Expectant mum are more than welcome. There is no charge for Local Authority residents, those who are parenting alone, or in receipt of social welfare, or whose children are attending speech and language/early intervention services. WEST LIMERICK 102FM CEILI: A Great Ceilí Night, not to be missed, will take place on Friday November 22 at Knockaderry Community Centre. The Music will be expertly supplied by Donie Nolan. It kicks off at 9.30pm – with Tea & Coffee Served including a raffle on the night. Admission is €10 and all are welcome.
MESSAGE FOR OUR POLISH PARISHIONERS: -The Next Polish Mass in Newcastle West will be on Tuesday, October 29. On October 27, in St. Michael’s Church, Limerick, there will be a festival of Blessed John Paul II – beginning with Mass at 12.30pm – followed by Polish food/refreshments.
LIMITED PLACES AVAILABLE FOR FILIAL PLAY: There are still a limited number of places available on West Limerick Resources’ Filial play programme – which starts on Friday, November 8, in the Newcastle West Family and Community Hub. The ten week programme is led by an experienced play therapist and can make a noticeable difference to your child’s behaviour (aged 2.5 to12). It will also make a positive difference to parent’s ability in responding effectively and confidently to the use of parenting skills. GARMENT OF FAITH: To mark the Year of Faith (October 11, 2012 to November 24, 2013), the Pastoral Council has decided to put together a Garment of Faith. People are asked to write (no names) a line or two stating what faith means to them on pieces of fabric in the church.

GST BOOK LAUNCH: The definitive History of the “North Kerry line” by Railway Historian, Dr Alan O Rourke will be launched shortly. The launch is provisionally fixed for Monday, November 25. It will be launched by Jimmy Deenihan TD, Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht in the Lartigue Museum Listowel at 8pm. There will also be a book Launch in Newcastle West Library, Gortboy at 8pm on Tuesday 26. Many years of research have gone into this book – it is published under the auspices of the Great Southern Trail. It is also hoped to bring together North Kerry Line associated families, on the evening, to make a start at recording the staff who worked along the line, between Limerick and Tralee, as well as on the Foynes & Fenit branches, and also to take photographs of surviving NK line staff & families. Please inform any families, you know, who were associated with the North Kerry Line, to participate in the launch. A public meeting on the proposed extension of the Great Southern Trail from the Kerry/Limerick border into Listowel will take place in the Listowel Family Resource Centre, John B. Keane Road, Listowel at 6pm on Saturday, October 19.

DESMOND COMPLEX: Our next Fun Day will take place on Wednesday, November 6. All the usual activities will take place and we hope for a large attendance. LANGUAGE & PLAY GROUP: The Newcastle West Language and Play programme runs each Wednesday from 10.30 to 12 Noon. This programme is full of activities to help children (under 4) get ready for preschool/school. It will include painting, play dough, arts and crafts, which will help you to understand the way your children play – and how playing can help children learn to read/write.
