CLIONA’S FOUNDATION CYCLE: Now in its sixth year will take place on Saturday August 31 from the Honeyfitz Theatre in Lough Gur, just 20km from Limerick city. With three routes including an 8km for family and funsters, the organisers have appealed to experienced cyclists with a challenging 90km route and a 40km less arduous route for leisure cyclists. Following the cycle there’s a BBQ, face painting, music and a bouncy castle to keep the entire family entertained. So popular is cycling that Cliona’s Foundation has founded it’s own cycling club which is affiliated to Cycling Ireland and is gaining new members each week. Cliona’s Foundation 6th Annual Charity Cycle was launched in Limerick last weekend by three well known celebrities who were delighted to be part of the event. David Wallace, Leanne Moore and Joy Neville have carved national and international fame in their own right and have supported Cliona’s Foundation over the years. Register on line by logging onto www.eventmaster.ie or on the day with registration starting at 8.30am in the Honeyfitz Theatre. Family Cycle starts at 9.45 a.m., Experienced Cycle starts at 10am & Leisure Cycle starts at 10.30 a.m. Entry is €30 for the Experienced and Leisure Cycles and €25 for the Family Cycle. LIMERICK WEST GIY: with the aim of inspiring people to grow their own food goes on the road again and this month we will pay a visit to Chris Enright’s growing area in Morenane, Kilcornan on Thursday August 15 with meeting time for the garden tour for 7pm. Chris has a garden that is just over two years old and has both fruit and vegetable areas. Although it is mid season in his garden with many of the crops now being harvested for winter storage Chris grows all year round so there will always be some produce to view with cabbage, potato and different varieties of pumpkin among the many crops sown. This year he has sown a number of varieties of potato from Sharpe’s Express, the blight resistant Sarpo range and a midlands variety called Black Bog. A tasting session of these varieties among others will take place later in the evening. Chris is an organic grower and is always willing to share his knowledge. All are welcome and as with all GIY meetings there is no charge to join in. If you plan to attend and need directions please text your name to Chris on 087 9918956.
