Church News: Mass in Broadford for the month of August will be on Saturday evenings at 7.30pm and on Sunday mornings at 9.30am. Reader for Saturday evening August 17th is Helen Lacy Pierce and Eucharistic Ministers are Mary Browne Glenduff and Mary Browne Broadford. Reader for Sunday morning is Sr. Ann Lenihan and the Eucharistic Ministers are Maudie Collins and Sr. Ann Lenihan.
Marian Shrine 25th Anniversary: Mass will be celebrated at the Marian Shrine in Broadford to mark the 25th Anniversary of the blessing of Our Lady’s statue which is situated across the road from Our Lady of the Snows church. It will take place on the Church Holyday Thursday August 15th, the Feast of the Assumption at 9.30am and with weather permitting the mass will be celebrated in the forecourt of the shrine and after the celebrations everybody is invited to some light refreshments and a chat in the Community Centre. The parish of Broadford has been dedicated to Our Lady of the Snows since the 12th century and to mark the Marian Year of 1987—1988 (John Paul 11 in a homily preached on January 1st 1987, proclaimed a Marian year from Pentecost 1987 to the Assumption 1988) the local community decided to erect a statue of Our Lady to mark the occasion. It was completed and blessed on August 15th 1988. The committee wish to thank everybody who supported the church gate collection in aid of the revamping work carried out at the Marian Shrine recently.
Bereavements: Our sympathy is extended to Mossie Reidy Newtown (formally Broadford) and his family on the death of his wife Margaret (nee Keating), to his sons Liam and family Ballinlongig, Micheal and his family Banteer and Mossie Jr. Newtownshandrum, his daughters Breda and family Newtownshandrum and Aileen and family Freemount, also to his brother in law Liam, sister in law Sheila, his brothers and sisters, all his relatives and friends. Go ndeana Dia trocaire ar an anam dilis. We would also like to extend our sympathy to Gerry and Mary O’Callaghan and family Boola Broadford on the death of Susan Healy (nee O’Callaghan) Coolea Co. Cork on August 5th and formally from Boola. Her remains laid in repose in St. Gobnaits Church Ballyvourney where her Requiem Mass was celebrated by Fr. O’Brien P.P. Ballyvourney/Coolea assisted by Fr. F. O’Dea P.P. Dromcollogher/Broadford with the Coolea Choir led by Peadar O’Riada and afterwards was laid to rest in the local cemetery. To Susan’s husband Donal, her nephews, nieces, all her relatives, neighbours and friends we offer our sympathy. Ar deis lamh Dé go raibh an anam dilis.
Pilgrimage to Knock: The Parish Pilgrimage to Our Lady’s Shrine in Knock will take place on Sunday next August 18th. The bus will be leaving Dromcollogher at 8am sharp and will travel via Broadford. Musical Gathering and Table Quiz: An invitation to the general public and especially past members of the Musicals and Plays which took place in Broadford since 1986 are invited to the” Musical Gathering” which will coincide with a performance of this year’s musical “Nunsense” which will be held in the Community Centre on Saturday August 31st at 8.15pm and afterwards a Table Quiz will be held at Begley’s with all the questions based on the Musicals that were performed by the group.
Gathering Events:The dates for the final week-end of the “Gathering” are from Thursday October 17th to Monday October 21st. The programme of events is now nearing completion and includes A Day at The Forge in Bygone Days ( this should bring back some memories), A Rambling House, An Evening of Jazz, Halloween Party Dance, Monster 45 Drive and much more. The next meeting regarding the finalizing of the events is on Tuesday August 20th at 9pm in the Community Centre. Everyone is invited to come along to help in putting together a series of local history events and entertainment. GAA Lottery Draw:The results of the Drom/Broadford lottery draw held on Monday night July 29th were. The numbers drawn were: - 2, 6, 19 and 24. The jackpot prize of €7,200 was not won. There were no winners of the Match 3 prize of €100. The lucky dip winners were Garrett Noonan Mountdellihy and Brian Reidy Monagae. Next week’s Jackpot is €7,300 and the match three prize is €150. Ladies Football: The Limerick under 16 team qualified for the All- Ireland final against Westmeath after they defeated Sligo at Tuam Co. Galway on Saturday last on the scoreline of 4-9 to 1-4. Local girl Ciara McCarthy came on as a sub at half time and played well and others from the Drom-Broadford club Norma and Sarah Shanahan are also on the panel. We wish them well in their preparations for the final. The Intermediate championship the Limerick girls lost to Tipperary in the qualifiers with the local club representatives were Donna Mulcahy who was introduced as a sub played well and Niamh McCarthy was also on the panel..
