NEWCASTLE WEST GOLF CLUB: All roads led to Newcastle West Golf Club on Saturday last for the STL 75th Anniversary Pro-Am golf tournament. It proved to be fantastic success again this year – attracting a very strong field of 53 Professionals, which included names like Damien McGrane, Colm Moriarty, Conor Thornton, David Higgins, Mark Staunton, Damien Mooney and many more. The winner was Colm Moriarty, with a stunning score of 62 (-9) which included 9 pars and 9 birdies. He started his round on the 10th hole and turned on 7 under par – winning by 5 shots and shattering the course record. Colm is attached to Glasson Golf Club in Athlone and hadn’t played the course before, which makes his achievement even more remarkable.

His nearest challengers on - 4 were Damien McGrane, Ian Colleran, Mark Staunton and John Kelly, with David Higgins on his own at -3. The Secretary of PGA Ireland, Michael McCumisky heaped praise on the Club, the members and the organizers for what he described as very well run and friendly tournament that attracted one of the strongest fields in the country. Jimmy Bolger, Captain of PGA Ireland thanked STL Logistics for their continued support – adding that the prize money and the entry was one of the best in the country. Club Captain, Paddy Lane said that the Club was delighted to welcome the PGA, all the Professionals, members and visitors who competed in the tournament. He thanked the officers of the PGA and the Professionals for their kind words of praise for the course. He also thanked STL Logistics for their support – saying that he would be delighted if they would ‘come on board’ again next year. The winning team were: Mark Staunton (Pro), Joe Lynch, Eugene Hannon and Declan Mooney. Some of the celebrity players included: Christy Roche (jockey), Jimmy Deenihan (Minister) and Bernard Brogan (former Dublin footballer) amongst others.

PALATINE HERITAGE CENTRE: The Irish Palatine Association will mark National Heritage Week by opening their Heritage Centre in Rathkeale on the Sunday afternoons of August 18 and August 25 from 2 - 5 p.m. Admission free. All are welcome.

FREE EVENTS IN CASTLE GROUNDS: Desmond Hall, the ancient Fitzgerald Castle in Newcastle West, will be buzzing with activity for this year’s National Heritage Week from August 17 to 25. The Office of Public Works (OPW), who manage the castle, have organised a series of free celebrations to mark this year’s Heritage Week – including talks on local history and archaeology, free concerts and musical performances by top class musicians. The events begin on Sunday, August 18, with a lecture on “The War of Independence in West Limerick” by renowned Limerick historian, Tom Toomey. On Wednesday, August 2, Author Joseph Lennon will give a presentation on “Medieval Castles in County Limerick”. Dr. John O’Callaghan of the University of Limerick will deliver a lecture on the Civil War in Limerick on Friday, August 23. Award winning uilleann piper, Mikie Smith will play traditional airs, jigs and reels on the evening of Saturday, August 24. Events will conclude, the following afternoon, with a traditional ‘singing session’ by the West Limerick Singers Club. All the events are completely free of charge and will be held in the castle’s five hundred year old banqueting hall, which has undergone a complete restoration. AWARE FLAGSHIP FUNDRAISER: Now’s your chance to get involved! Who can get involved? Anyone who genuinely cares about the issue of depression and its impact. We also need local area coordinators to manage the collections and support volunteer collectors in their local area for one, two or three days. GROW IT YOURSELF: Limerick West GIY – with the aim of inspiring people to grow their own food, goes on the road again. This month, on Thursday, August 15, we will pay a visit to Chris Enright’s growing area in Morenane, Kilcornan – with meeting time for the garden tour at 7pm. Chris has a garden that is just over two years old that includes both fruit and vegetable areas. Although it is mid season, with many of the crops now being harvested for winter storage, Chris grows all year round and consequently there will always be some produce to – with cabbage, potato and different varieties of pumpkin among the many crops sown. This year, he has sown a number of varieties of potato – from Sharpe’s Express, to the blight resistant Sarpo range and a midlands variety called Black Bog. A tasting session of these varieties will take place later in the evening. Chris is an organic grower and is always willing to share his knowledge. AUTUMN FAIR: Desmond Complex will be holding an Autumn Fair from 1pm to 6pm on Sunday, August 25 on the grounds of the Desmond Complex. There will be many attractions on the day including stalls, music, games for the children and a draw with some fabulous prizes. This fair is intended as a fundraising event, but it will also provide information to the people from the local area about the facilities we provide for various groups of people from far and wide. GREAT SOUTHERN TRAIL: The Great SouthernTrail has been granted a complimentary, group return, rail journey by Iarnród Éireann, and proposes to avail of their generosity by making a visit to the West of Ireland. The plan is to commence the tour from Limerick Station at 9 am on Monday, September 2 – by boarding the direct train to Galway. At Galway we transfer to a coach for a full day tour of Connemara, visiting Ballynahinch Castle (www.ballynahinch-castle.com), Clifden, Kylemore, Leenane and entering Westport from the Croagh Patrick direction. Lunch will be provided on the day, along with a light evening meal. On arrival in Westport, we check-in to our hotel for two nights B+B and 1 Dinner(on the second evening).

On Monday, we will be transferred by coach to Achill, to begin our, mostly downhill cycle, along the Great Western Greenway( www.greenway.ie). Anyone unable to complete the entire 25 miles will be picked up by mini-bus along the way. On

Tuesday morning will be free to explore Westport, before departing from the local station on the 1.10 pm train, via Roscommon, Athlone and Portarlington (change trains) arriving in Limerick at 5.40 pm – where the tour ends. The cost of €200 covers everything outlined above – on the basis of sharing a room. A single room (limited number) will increase the cost to €240. DESMOND COMPLEX: The next Fun Day will take place on Wednesday, August 21. All the usual activities will take place and we hope for a large attendance. We would like to remind people to contact Brendan on (069) 84069 to enable us to have a good approximation on numbers. Desmond complex are holding an Autumn Fair on Sunday, August 25 from 1pm to 6pm. It’s a day for all the family, with games for the children, face painting, stalls selling a variety of goods and live music. We will also be selling lines for a draw with some fabulous prizes. The 1st prize is two nights B&B in the Vienna Woods Hotel, Cork. 2nd prize is a signed Limerick jersey, kindly sponsored by Adrenalin Sports, and 3rd prize is one month’s membership of the Woodlands Hotel Leisure Centre. There are lots of other prizes – too numerous to mention. The prizes were sponsored by businesses in the Newcastle West and West Limerick area. Please come along and enjoy the day. The Fair will be held indoors if the weather is inclement. We would also like to remind people about the hospitalities offered by the Desmond Complex. Dinners are available on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays of every week – with music on most days.
