At the time of writing no official results were available, but the programme of events clearly showed great involvement from participants and promoters of South, East, West and the city of Limerick and in spite of fear that competitions might be down this year, I witnessed great crowds making their way to the new venue at Mary I College on both Saturday and Sunday morning.

WEST SOCCER AWARDS: Three Granagh Utd. FC. Underage players have been nominated for the Desmond Schoolboy League “Player of the Year” 2013 award. This was the exciting news for the parish soccer club this week.

The local players receiving the awards include Terrence Buckley U/16 Division 1, John Geary, U/14 division 2 and Conor Frawley, U/8, division 2.

The West Limerick soccer awards night will be presented with their runner up Munster and All Ireland medals also at this function.

There was no winner of the €14,300 soccer club jackpot last week, lucky dips went to Denis Corcoran, Lattin, Mary Lopez, Coolruss, Siobhan McCormack, c/o The Rock bar.

Tickets are on sale for the local soccer club draw at O’Gormans shop/petrol station, Chawkes Cross, The Rock Bar, Granagh, Hickeys Bar, Croom, Bennis’ bar Ballyagran or from any of the soccer club promoters. They cost €2.

GAA CLUB LEAGUE GAMES: Granagh/Ballingarry Gaelic Games teams faced tough county and west divisional league matches last week. The senior hurlers although short a few regulars showed creditable courage to take on in form Kilmallock who are rated the top senior hurling team in the county at the moment.

Our five point defeat in the circumstances was considered by most supporters to be a high standard performance with no-goal conceded by either side on the 0-14 to 0-9 scoreline.

The Junior B hurlers lost 1-17 to 1-13 in the 4th round, to Templeglantine, this game was even closer than the 4 points that separated the local side at the end , as Granagh/Ballingarry were leading for most of the match it was unlucky to be beaten in the final minutes.

COMMUNITY GAMES FINALs: Granagh/Ballingarry branch of the community games were represented last week in Athlone by Ellen Murphy and Sean O’Connor in cross country, Eve Higgins in swimming and Eoin Sheahan in the arts competition.

While the four local participants gave outstanding performances, they were just shaded out of the medal positions in their respective events. But the combined parishes parents, trainers/coaches and supporters can be very proud of our four representatives reaching the national community games finals.
