COMMUNITY GAMES NOTES: Congratulations to all the children who competed at the Community Games National finals in Athlone recently. Fantastic performances all round including 4th place in girls under-14 individual swimming for Shannon Smith of Wood Road and Gold medals for the under-10 Indoor soccer squad.

The under-10 Indoor soccer team, already County and Munster champions, continued their fantastic run of success in winning out this National Competition – the first ever under-10 Indoor soccer competition at Community Games. Crossmolina, the Connaught champions, were their opponents in the semi final and this was a very tough game that could have gone either way. A well-taken chance in the last five minutes was the decider for ACM boys and they went through to the finals facing Letterkenny on Sunday morning (May 26). Ahane scored first but then went behind during an intense period of play when the opposition scored 3 fast goals. Ahane, with a well-coached team performance, came back to level the score. With 30 seconds to go, Ahane were awarded a free kick and a brilliant set piece, that had been practiced over many training sessions, resulted in the ball being slotted into the back of the net. The whistle blew shortly after that and, in scenes of great excitement, the boys became the first ever National under-10 Indoor Soccer Champions. Well done to all the players Gavin Rowsome, Niall Byrnes, Gavin Cole, Shane O’Grady, Ciaran Coulter, Evan O’Leary, Mark Murphy, Liam O’Mara and great thanks and praise to their Manager Grainne Murphy and dedicated coaches Niall Byrnes and Greg Coulter.

CASTLE GOLF SOCIETY: Twenty four members of the Society travelled to Castletroy Golf Club on Saturday May 11th to play their third outing of the season. There were many positives contributing to making it a great day for the player’s enjoyment: a cheerful atmosphere amongst the players, free-flowing banter, an opportunity for players to improve their position on the G.O.Y. table, the course in superb condition and a high level of anticipation from each player for a good performance on the day. The weather certainly had a major effect on the day’s play due to heavy showers and extremely strong winds leading to energy sapping conditions. However undaunted, the competitive nature of the players emerged resulting in some exceptional golf being played and excellent results were returned. Once again a close finish materialised with just three points separating the top four players and it was significant that the more experienced players were in the winners enclosure. Joan Garahy was surely firing on all cylinders, displaying patience, admirable resilience, sufficient success in using the wind to her advantage and the combination of all these qualities realised a brilliant score of 36 points. and she deservedly won the first prize. Congratulations to Joan. Ger Carroll was in sparkling form and amassed a superb score of 35 points to clinch the second prize. Noel Ryan, enjoying a purple patch was rewarded with a great score of 35 points and eased him into third place. Willie Reddy’s fine play totted up to a superb 33 points and into fourth place. Declan Ahern won the front nine with 18 points and Tim McCarthy took the back nine with 15 points. Willie Reddy won nearest the pin. Connie Carroll won the longest drive and what a fantastic drive it was. WOW! The presentation of prizes took place at Guerin’s later that evening. Noel Ryan, Captain of the Society, welcomed all those present and said he was delighted with the outing. Noel thanked the Guerin’s for their hospitality, the players for their support and the committee for their efficiency and those who helped in any way. He congratulated all the prizewinners. Next Outing will be at Portumna Golf Club on Saturday June 22.
