GOLF CLUB: Following on the success of last year’s Golf Pro-Am, it was decided to host the event again this year in conjunction with the 75th anniversary celebrations. The main sponsor again this year is STL Logistics and the official launch will take place at the Golf Club on July 19 at 2 pm. SUPPORTING CHILDREN THROUGH BEREAVEMENT: The Newcastle West Family and Community Hub (located upstairs at the NCW Community Centre) will hold a workshop on Wednesday, June 12. It will focus on supporting children with bereavement, or coping with a dying family member. Running from 7.30 to 9.30pm, the session will be led by Child Psychologist and Play Therapist, Tina O’Brien. It is funded by the Compassionate Communities Project – with the support of West Limerick Resources.

GROW COMMUNITY MENTAL HEALTH MOVEMENT: Are you struggling with anxiety or depression? Finding life difficult? Feeling Isolation, Loneliness, Shyness? Do you find it difficult to talk? Support and friendship make up the cornerstones of Grow. One of its mottos is “you alone can do it, but you can’t do it alone”. Grow meets on Thursdays at 8pm in the ‘Station Room’, Desmond Complex, Newcastle West. No introductions are necessary. Just come along.

RAINBOWS SUPPORT SERVICES: A workshop of Rainbows volunteers, and those interested in volunteering with the project in West Limerick, this September, will take place in the Newcastle West Family and Community Hub (located at the Community Centre) on Wednesday, June 19 from 7.30 to 9.30pm. “Rainbows” is a peer support programme for children aged 6-10 years – grieving as a result of a loss or separation, and is managed locally by West Limerick Resources. Run by trained volunteers, the programme is positive, gentle, confidential and encouraging. However, it is not counseling or therapy service. It is a safe, confidential setting, where children can share their grief-associated feelings, with each other, and also with trained facilitators.

MISS WEST LIMERICK 2013: On July 5, in the Devon Inn at 8pm, West Limerick 102fm will host a night to crown the first Miss West Limerick 2013. A night that will reflect all that is good about West Limerick’s young women, it promises to be a night for all ages. “West Limerick 102fm continues to celebrate life in West Limerick; including nights like, the Best of the West, the Country Music Awards, and now Miss West Limerick – all aim to do just that” said Joe McGill, Manager at West Limerick 102fm. How do you become the next Miss West Limerick? Each contestant is entered on behalf of a business or community group, at a cost of €70. The contestants will be interviewed during the day of July 5, by a judging committee, who will put them through their paces, on stage with a brief chat and perhaps a party piece. Contestants from West Limerick or residing in West Limerick will qualify for entry. The age band will be 18-28 years of age up to July 5. “Miss West Limerick will reflect the intelligence, compassion and independence of modern Irish women. Miss West Limerick will represent the collective aspirations, social responsibilities and ambitions of young women from a variety of communities and backgrounds.” said Connie Broderick Manager at West Limerick 102fm. ARRA FRIENDS: The Mid-Western Region will hold a Gathering Event at Bunratty Castle on June 12 - more details to follow. A trip to Youghal will take place on June 18 for 3 nights, including Dinner, Bed & Breakfast. Pick up and return at Newcastle West. Non members are also welcome. WEST LIMERICK 102FM: West Limerick 102FM will hold a fundraising Race Night at Murphy’s Bar Abbeyfeale on Saturday, June 8 at 8pm. A horse can be purchased for €10 or a 50% share for €5. This promises to be a very entertaining and enjoyable night – where you will get a good run for your money. MEN’S HEALTH WEEK: Men’s Health Week will run from Monday, June 10 until Sunday, June 16. The theme for 2013 in Ireland is: “Action Men - Turning Words into Actions”. This year, staff of the Primary Health Care Project for Travellers will be calling to men in Newcastle West and Rathkeale to give them men’s health information packs. The men can also enter a draw for a “Men’s pamper pack”. The draw will take place on the radio programme, Community Health Matters, on West Limerick 102fm on Wednesday, July 3 – just after the 11 am news. The July programme is dedicated to men’s health – with the team interviewing John O’Sullivan, Men’s Health Worker at Cork’s Traveller Visibility Group and John Collins, Men’s Health Worker at Pavee Point. SUMMER CAMPS: West Limerick Resources will be running summer camps again this year in Newcastle West. Combining art, sport, games and lots of fun, it is open to children who are at present in senior infants to 4th class – whose parents are in receipt of a means tested social welfare payment – including lone parent allowance, jobseekers allowance, disability or family income supplement. Cost €5. The summer camps will take place from July 1 to July 4, from 11am to 1pm each day, and places are limited. Application forms will be available at the Newcastle West Community Centre or West Limerick Resources office. Volunteers are also required to help out at the camps. Call 069 79113

DESMOND COMPLEX EVENTS: The next Fun Day will take place on Wednesday, June 19. All the usual activities will take place and we are hopeful of a large attendance. We would again like to remind people to contact Brendan on (069) 84069 to enable us to have a good approximation on numbers. We intend to organize a weeks holiday in Mayo – starting on Sunday, July 7. The trip will include the following: A day tour to the Village of Cong, where the Quiet Man was filmed and a visit to Ballintubber Abbey. We will also take in the modern, abstract Way of the Cross, an underground permanent Crib, a Rosary Way and a small museum, a day tour of the Ceide fields – this archaeological site contains the remains of a Stone Age landscape of stone walled fields, houses and megalithic tombs over 5,000 years old. The Holiday will cost €345 PPS, with €100 payable on booking. This covers transport, bed, breakfast and evening meal. Single accommodation will cost extra. REMEMBRANCE SERVICE: A remembrance service will be held in St. Paul’s Church, Dooradoyle, Limerick on Sunday, June 9 at 3pm. This service will bring families together in support, and hope, to remember a loved one who died at Mid-Western Regional Hospital in the previous 12 months. You, and your family, are most welcome to attend. Please bring a photo or symbol of your loved one, if you so wish, to place in the Remembrance Area.

PILGRIMAGE TO KNOCK: Parishioners from Ardagh/Carrickerry, Dromcollogher/Broadford, Feenagh/Kilmeedy, Killeedy, Mahoonagh, Monagea and Newcastle West are invited to take part in the annual Pastoral Area pilgrimage to Knock, which will take place on Sunday, June 9. Bus fare: € 16.00. We will celebrate a Mass for the Pastoral Area in Knock and join in the programme of devotions there. We will stop in the Lady Gregory Hotel on the way home (€ 21.00 for a 3-course dinner). OLD FURNITURE: Old & old-fashioned furniture (excluding sofas & mattresses) & old/ broken tiles & plates are wanted for a new Newcastle West based furniture up-cycling & mosaic-making training course for people who are unemployed. This training course will train people to restyle old but solid furniture so that it can be re-used. Pick-up of the furniture can be arranged at a cost of €5 per trip – only usable furniture can be taken.
