Novena to the Sacred Heart: The annual Novena to the Sacred Heart continues at Our Lady of the Snows church Broadford until the feast day of the Sacred Hearth on this Friday June 7th. Novena prayers will be recited every morning at 9.30am.

Pastoral Area Pilgrimage to Knock: The Dromcollogher/Broadford parish pastoral area (St. Mary’s) which includes the neighbouring parishes of Newcastle West, Monagea, Killeedy, Ardagh/Carrigkerry, Feenagh/Kilmeedy and Feohanagh/Castlemahon and their annual pilgrimage to Knock will take place on Sunday 9th June, if interested give your name in Broadford to Kitty Duggan phone no. is 063/84167 or in Dromcollogher to Mary Hartnett phone no. 063/83989.

Fleadh Cheoil Luimní: Congratulations to Ellen Reidy Springfield who qualified for the Munster Fleadh in the Under 12 solo concertina competition which was held at the Mary Immaculate College Campus last week-end and she also qualified along with her sister Sineád and Conor Stack in the Under 12 trio competition and to crown a great week-end Sinead won the Under 10 tin whistle competition also well done to Coireall MacCurtáin Rathpalatine who won the cup for Amháin Sinsear as Gaeilge competition. The Munster Fleadh Cheoil will be held at the U.L. Campus on July 20th and 21st.

Mackey Stand Draw: - The June draw of the Limerick Club Development draw formally known as the Mackey Stand Draw takes place this Friday June 7th. All local members contact your promoter now.

Wedding Bells: - Congratulations to Maura Neenan daughter of John and Helen Neenan Broadford and Tommie Cregan son of John and Pa Cregan Rowels on the occasion of their wedding at Our Lady of the Snows Church Broadford on Saturday June 1st with Canon S. Ambrose as chief celebrant assisted by Fr. F. O’Dea PP Dromcollogher/Broadford. The chief bridesmaid was Helen Neenan and the bridesmaid was Mary O’Connell. Best Man was Jack Breen and the groomsman was Brendan Curtin The page boys were Robbie Neenan and Adam Curtin. Music in the church was provided by the wonderful Ennis Gospel Choir. The reception was held in the Devon Hotel Templeglantine where the happy couple with their families, neighbours and friends celebrated the joyous occasion.

Trip to Athlone: Broadford and District Active Retirement Associations outing to the town of Athlone on the river Shannon and its hinterland takes place on Saturday June 8th and with the numbers wishing to travel gone over the 37 seater mark we have gone for the 53 seater bus to accommodate the extra numbers. A brief reminder of the itinerary is as follows: - the bus will leave the Car Park in Broadford at 8.30am and travel via Dromcollogher where the pickup point will be at the former A.I.B., then on to Newcastle West and pickup point at the Courtney Lodge then on to Limerick with a stop at the South Court Hotel, we will then head on for the Dublin road to Nenagh where we will take to the N52 via Borrisokane to Birr where we will have our breakfast in Dooleys Hotel. Next on the road will be Shannonbridge and on to historic Clonmacnoise on the banks of the Shannon where St. Ciarán had an early Christian Monastic settlement ( and a 14th century poet describes the place as “a quite watered land, a land of rose stands St. Ciarán city fair and the warriors of Erin in their famous generations slumber their”) and the site has a number of well-preserved Round Towers and High Crosses as well as an Interpreter Centre which is a must visit for everybody. We then drive through Cloghan, on to Ferbane and then the center of Ireland which is Athlone with its famous bridge where Patrick Sarsfield and Sargent Costume (the army Barracks in Athlone is named after him) fought to hold off the Williamite army after the Battle of the Boyne. Here also is an opportunity to visit the Athlone Castle Visitor Centre in St. Peters Square and for the adventurous seafaring among us, we have an optional cruise on the majestic Shannon and of course we have several Shopping Outlets and Boutiques to browse through in the town itself. On the return journey we pass through Tullamore, the chief town of Co, Offaly, on to Kilcormac and back to Dooleys Hotel in Birr for dinner, afterwards we head for Roscrea, on to the N7 to Limerick and home again hopefully well contended after our trip.

Bereavements: - Our sympathy is extended to David, Ned and Kathleen O’Keeffe and families Broadford on the death of their aunt Mrs. Joan Shaughnessy (nee Brosnan) of Ballinakill Newtownshandrum and also to her sons and daughter and families, her sister Nellie Kiely and family Dromcollogher and her brother Willie Brosnan and family Meelin. Her removable took place from O’Malley’s funeral home Charleville for her requiem in Newtownshandrum church on Sunday June 2nd with Fr. E. Barrett as chief celebrant assisted by Canon S. Ambrose and Fr. Pat Doody a friend of the family, Afterwards she was laid to rest in Shandrum cemetery. May she rest in peace.Sympathy is also extended to the all the Noonan families of Dromcollogher and on the death of Denny Noonan Mountdellihy Dromcollogher and also to the O’Sullivan families Dromcollogher, Fitzmaurice families Feenagh and the Fitzgibbon families Milford on the death of Mrs. Nancy O’Sullivan (nee Fitzmaurice) Carraward West Dromcollogher. 50th Anniversary Celebrations (1963-2013): Scoil Mhuire Broadford and the community will celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the opening of the school in 1963 on Friday June 21st 2013. In order to make this a memorable occasion, they would like to display photographs of pupils of Broadford and Knocktooch schools through the years. Photographs may be handed in to the school or contact 063/84214 or scoilmhuire@broadford.iol.ie to arrange for collection. All photos’ will be scanned and returned immediately.

Tidy Towns Church Gate Collection: - This week-end June 8th and 9th we will have our annual church gate collection at both masses. Last year we won 1st place in “Limerick in Bloom” and 3rd place in our category in the Tidy Towns competition and without your continued help and support we cannot continue to achieve this level in these competitions. Many thanks again. With the weather improving the committee members are busy planting around the village and it’s environments to enhance the look of the village and surrounding area for 2013. In order to improve on the high marking achieved so far all residents of the area are urged to help in the ongoing work carried out by volunteers and also to ensure their own properties maintain the high standers they have achieved over the years. The committee wishes to thank the Fás workers for their great help every year which is also greatly appreciated. The hanging baskets are also ready to be placed in their usual places.

Dates for the Gathering: The “The Gathering” will take place in Broadford from October 3rd to the 6th inclusive 2013. The organizing committee is asking families who have family members anywhere in Ireland and across the seas to let them know the dates and maybe invite them to arrange their week-end at home or even to take their holidays around that week-end in early October. The next meeting regarding the planning for the event is on Tuesday June 11th at 9pm in the Community Centre. County Titles for Ladies Football Teams: Congratulations to the local Drom/Broadford ladies football club on winning two county titles over the past weeks. First up was the Under 14 team which captured the county Under 14B championship by defeating local rivals Feohanagh/Castlemahon by a single point 0-10 to 0-9 in a trilling final. The team lined out: Rebecca McGuiness, Jessica Roche, Ciara Purcell (captain) Aisling Enright, Lettita Cotter, Meadbh McCarthy, Shannon Buckley, Aoife McMahon, Teegan Kelliher, Laura Stack, Katie McCarthy, Aoife Kiely, Kathy Foley, Danielle Ahern and Julia O’Shea. Subs:- Sarah Sheehan, Nikita Dooney, Ava Mullane, Ciara Heenan, Larissa McCarthy, Aine O’Sullivan, Millie Mulcahy, Blathin Matthews and Melanie Gilbourne. The senior team defeated Mungret in the All County League 13 a side final played at Ballingarry on Tuesday evening 28th. Gerry Donnelly Memorial Tournament: Broadford Golfing Society held their annual Gerry Donnelly memorial golf tournament at one of the most scenic golf courses in Ireland at Cobh Golf Club on Saturday May 25th. This was the first visit by the society to the Cork course and everybody was full of praise for the fabulous and testing lay out of the venue and was enjoyed by all. The results of the tournament was; 1st Stephen Stokes Tullylease, 2nd Gerry Coleman Kilmeedy and 3rd John Kenneally Broadford

Handball News:- Well done to the Under 13 girls’ team who won silver medals at the National Community Games finals which took place at Ballygar Co. Galway last week-end. The girls were Ashling Shanahan, Kerri Murphy, Ciara Sheehy and Eimear Lehane. Their coaches were Pat Murphy and Siobhán Lehane. The annual Martin Crowe Memorial tournament will take place this year on the week-end of June 22nd and 23rd. This year’s Summer Camp is from July 15th to19th.

G.A.A. Lottery: The Numbers drawn in the local GAA lottery at the Begley’s Bar on Monday May 27th were 5, 6, 20 and 27. The match three prize winner was Hannah O’Connor Tullylease. The lucky dips of €50 each were won by Coireall MacCurtáin Rathpalatine and Mark O’Brien Dromcollogher and Damian Lacey Knockacraig Dromcollogher. The next draw takes place in Nunans Dromcollogher on Monday June 3rd. The Jackpot goes to €6,300 (win or share) and the Match 3 prize is €100 (win or share). All sold tickets to be handed in at the clubhouse on Monday evenings before 9o’clock. Tickets are available from any member of the committee or from all business premises, tickets €2 each or three for a €5. Thank you for your support.

Parent and Toddler Group: The parent and toddler group meet every Thursday in the Daycare Centre Broadford from 10:30 to 12 noon. This is an opportunity for parents, grandparents and carers to meet and chat while the children play in a safe environment. All welcome.

Community Games News: - Well done to all who took part in the National Finals in Athlone last week-end. The under 13 girl’s handball team of Eimear Lehane, Aisling Shanahan, Ciara Sheehy and Kerrie Murphy won silver medals. Brian Ahern Farrihy was a member of the Limerick cross-country team and achieved 4th place. Robert McCarthy and Ali Croke gained a lot of experience competing in the Under 11 project as did Chloe Farrell, Evelyne Mancassola, Sarah Enright and Sinéad Wright in the Under 13 project The Choir team of Brian Ahern, Ciara McCarthy, Danielle Ahern, Ellen Reidy, Gráinne Buckley, Julia O’Shea, Kathy Foley, Laura Stack, Maeve Geary, Muireann O’Callaghan, Rónán Buckley, Shane McCarthy and Yvonne Stack were very unlucky not to be placed. Training continues every Wednesday evenings for (1) High Jump at 6pm and (2) athletics at 6.30pm.
