REGRETTED DEATH : There was widespread regret locally at the news of the death of former local resident, John (Sean) Fitzgerald Star Crescent, Mitchelstown who died peacefully in the presence of his family at Corpus Christi Nursing Home, Mitchelstown, formerly of Thomastown where he had a farm John was always a very popular gentleman who visited Kilfinane on numerous occasions. Survived by wife Ann nee McGrath, brothers William, Patrick, Fr Christopher OSA, (Michael) Joseph and sisters Sr. Margarita in Stockport, Sr. Michael in Birmingham, sisters-in-law, brother-in-law, nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, relatives, large circle of friends. Brother of the late Eileen, Brid and Bernadette. John was reposed at McCarthy’s Funeral Home on Saturday evening last before Removal to Our Lady Conceived Without Sin Parish Church, Mitchelstown where the Requiem Mass was celebrated on Sunday at midday followed by Burial in Brigown Cemetery. COLLECTION THANK YOU : The Irish Wheelchair Association taken up at Church Gate in Kilfinane last weekend raised €410, the Association wish to Thank those who took up the collection and especially those who contributed to the collection. Tour support is appreciated.

KILFINANE TENNIS CLUB : A massive €887 was raised at the Tennis Club Table Quiz which was held on Saturday 10 August, We would like to thank all those who took part, the volunteers and sponsors. We really appreciate the support. The money will go towards a new net and repairing the court.

KILFINANE PLAYSCHOOL : Kilfinane Playschool will begin its new school year on today Thursday August 29 at 9am there was an open day for the new pupils that are starting on yesterday Wednesday August 28.There is still availability in the playschool for this coming year please contact Mary Wall on 087 2726627.

BLACKTOCK CAMOGIE CLUB : Congratulations to Jim Downey on winning First Prize of a signed framed Limerick GAA Jersey, in the guess the score run by the Camogie club and Bord na nOg, also congratulations to Mark O’Ttoole on winning Second Prize of €50 . SUCCESSFUL DOG SHOW AT ANIMAL SANCTUARY : On Sunday last 25 August Limerick Animal Welfare held their Annual Dog Show at the sanctuary in Moorestown. The event which is a very popular one with families attracted a large crowd which commenced at 12 noon and continued to 4pm . Included on the very attractive programme were A Fancy Dress, Best Greyhound, Best Couple Dog and Owner, Judge’s Favourite, Best Rescue of course Best in Show. The Dog Show is always a popular item on the programme as was the case on Sunday, other attractions included ‘The Great Sausage Race’ which the Sanctuary staff once again hosted for all present and their dogs. Other highlights were the Treasure Hunt for children plus Raffle, Refreshments, Ice Cream and Home Baking and Hot Food.

SEMI FINAL SPOT FOR JUNIOR HURLERS : On Friday evening last 23 August the Junior Hurlers had a good win over Camogue Rovers in the South Junior ‘B’ Hurling Championship 3.17 to 1.11 played in Kilbreedy, Blackrock got off to a great start with points from James O’Dohertry (2) Mike Roche and Eddie O’Keeffe before Camogue Rovers opened their account with a point from a 65, but Blackrock continued to dominate further points from Kenneth Douglas (2), Patrick Cleary, James O’Doherty (3), Eddie O’Keeffe and Mike Roche as well as a goal from Eddie O’Keeffe to lead at the interval 1.12 to 0.06. Camogue Rovers rallied in the early stages of the second half scoring three points, once again Blackrock hit back and point from Adrian Cooke followed by a second Eddie O’Keeffe goal and one from James O’Doherty sealed the win ensuring Blackrock won the group and a place in the South Semi Final on 7 September where they will play Bruee or Casrletown Ballyagran. HURLERS IN CHAMPIONSHIP QUARTER FINAL ON THIS SATURDAY : Blackrock will play Kileedy in the County Intermediate Hurling Championship Quarter Final on this Saturday 31 August 31 in Dromcolligher with a 6.30pm. throw in. This is the third year in a row that the two sides cross sticks in the County Intermediate Championship, in 2011 in the opening round of the Championship played on Friday 13 May in Ballyagran, it was Kileedy who scored a 0.17 to 0.09 victory while last year the sides also played in opening round of the Championship, the game played on Friday 11 May in Feenagh saw Blackrock score a 2.17 to 0.12 victory. The game on Saturday is a County Quarter Final with a huge prize at stake, not only a place in the County Semi Final but also a place in the Premier Intermediate Championship in 2014.

KILFINANE ATHLETIC CLUB : MARTIN HENNESSY’S ICELANDIC ADVENTURE : In the last few weeks Kilfinane AC’s Martin Hennessy completed the Racing The Planet: Iceland 2013 Endurance event. There are no shortage of hardy runners wearing the blue and green, but there’s no doubting the toughness and resilience of Martin Hennessy who was one of the 270 who started out on the 155-mile journey across the beautiful Nordic country. This was Martin’s third Racing The Planet / 4 Deserts event having completed the Sahara Race in 2011 and Jordan 2012. Martin was 89th Overall and completed the course in 41:04:35. Amazing achievement!. Local Races : The MooreAbbey Milers Race in Galbally on Saturday 24 August was the main race of interest on the local scene this week with 7 of Kilfinane AC’s runners taking on this tough but very scenic 5 mile route along quite country roads. The rain didn’t dampen the spirits of the large contingent with MooreAbbey Milers ensuring everything went smoothly on the night. The following are the times posted by Kilfinane AC runners, Sean Manning 37th 0:34:27, Breda Bridges 71st 0:39:44, Ben Begley 74th 0:40:02, Robert Creed 112th 0:46:33, Tina Hayes 117th 0:47:37, Helen O Sullivan 125th 0:50:24, Una Power 133rd 0:52:09. Thanks to Niamh Doody and Patricia Donnelly Wade who travelled to support also. Breda Bridges made it a race double this weekend by completing the Murroe 5k in an excellent time of 23:58. Well done to Edel Hennessy who completed 7 of the 8 races in the IMRA Munster Wednesday League series, finishing Fifth lady overall. Many of our runners are eyeing up the Charleville Half Marathon which takes place on Sunday 22 September and continue to put in great effort in training. On Saturday morning last Seamus Hourigan, Gary Egan, Joe O’ Brien, Donnacha Enright and Mike Mc Cauliffie clocked up 18 miles in the early morning sun. County Novice & Juvenile Cross Country - University Limerick, Sunday 13 Oct. County Intermediate & Masters Cross Country - Kilfinane. Training : Saturday training will continue at 9am in Dromin. Midweek training is set to commence in the coming weeks. New members always welcome.

Bruff RFC:Underage training re-commences on Sunday 1 September at 10:30am for Mini rugby (ages 6 - 12) and at 11:30 am for Youth rugby (ages 13 -18). Looking forward to seeing you there.
