KENRY HISTORY TOUR: On the afternoon of Sunday April 7, the local history society outing to the Castletown area took place under the direction of Br John Feheney. The tour was aborted because of the cold weather while Br John held his hearers captive with his vast knowledge of the people who figured so much in the history of the area, especially since the Elizabethan and Cromwellian settlements. In Castletown Church of Ireland where the Kenry Society members and their friends met, John had ready prompting from the many commemorative tablets that adorn its walls in memory of the most influential family of the Wallers that settled in Castletown and built their own manor house there. He traced the history of the area from these early settlers down to our own day and the events that troubled the area during the War of Independence and its aftermath. The talk concluded with thanks to Br John and to the Church of Ireland community and the Downes family who made the venue available. For more information on John’s publications that are available free to internet users including his latest Autobiographical Dictionary covering the area of Lower Connello and his own personal history from his birth to his work for his Order of Presentation Brothers and the many publications in the area of education.
