BRUFF TIDY TOWNS: LENORE QUILTY AWARDS SCHEME:“If each before his own door swept, the whole village would be clean”. Chinese Proverb. It does not seem like a year since we launched this scheme. The aim is to promote local involvement in the upkeep of streets/estates as well as to encourage householders and businesses to brighten up their own area. Categories are as follows: CATEGORY 1: Best Kept Housing Estate/Street, CATEGORY 2: Best Front Garden - Urban or Rural. CATEGORY 3: Window Boxes/Hanging Baskets and CATEGORY 4: Best Kept Shop Front/Business. The main criteria for adjudication are:• Litter Control , • Colour - Including Planting and Painting, • Weed Control and • Overall Appearance. Application forms may be got from any member of the committee or by ringing 086 3375207. We would ask you to call together some like-minded neighbours and form a small committee with a view to entering before Wednesday, 19th May, 2013. An awards ceremony will be held in the Autumn and prizes will be given out. Please let’s get together and make a “blooming”difference.
LOUGH DERG PILGRIMAGE: A number of people from the parish have expressed an interest in going to Lough Derg for a three day pilgrimage. Abbey Coaches are running buses on Saturday 1st June, Tuesday 2nd July and Friday 26th July with pick up in Limerick City. The cost is €120 which includes bus, boat, accommodation and “refreshments” on the island. You may have considered going at some stage but did not know where to start or did not fancy going with strangers so now is an ideal opportunity. KNOCKAINEY AFC FESTIVAL 2013: Knockainey AFC is celebrating its 20 year anniversary by holding a Festival this June bank holiday weekend to celebrate youth, sport and community. BRUFF COMMUNITY PLAYGROUND: The Community Playground Committee have been thrilled with the level of support for our “Night at the Dogs” on Saturday, May 11th, at the Greyhound track on the Dock Road. Everyone in the parish of Bruff, Grange and Meanus – and all of our neighbours - have been hugely supportive, from buying entrance tickets to providing sponsorship. Entrance tickets, which must be bought in advance to count, are still available in Nagles or by calling 086-3142030 , and are at €10 (under 16’s are free). Highlights on the night include the auction of a greyhound pup donated by Kilkenny trainer, Paul Hennessy, a raffle where the first prize is an Angus heifer, a best-dressed lady competition, and clubs race. LIMERICK WEST GIY: with the aim of inspiring people to grow their own food will hold its May meeting on Thursday 16th May @ 7.00pm sharp in D&M Garden Centre, Croagh with new growers and old hands all welcome. This months talk will be all about foods that may benefit your health (Let food be your Pharmacy). We will also continue our seed / plant swaps so please bring any unwanted seeds or excess plants and who knows you might just pick up that seed / plant you have been looking for. There is no need to bring anything if you don’t have spares and you can still take what you see during the swap. For June, July and August we will be on the road visiting gardens at our usual meeting time. More details at next meeting and in local press over the coming weeks.
BEREA BLUEGRASS/ GOSPEL COLLEGE BAND: will perform in the Church of Ireland, Bruff on Tuesday 21st May from 8p.m. The Berea Band features Ashley Long, vocalist. This is a performance not to be missed. Tickets are €10 and can be purchased from Community Council members in advance or at the door, but as places are limited it might be best to get your ticket in advance.
LETTERS EXHIBITION: Plans are at an advanced stage for the “Letters from the Past” Exhibition which will take place in the Courthouse on the first week in July as part of ‘The Gathering’ Festival. The Organisers are very pleased with the response, with samples of correspondence between Bruff and England, New Zealand, the U.S., etc . down through the years. These letters show the joys and sorrows of people’s lives as well as being social and historical documents reflecting changes in culture, attitudes, etc through the years.
