“The Blackwater Tragedy”: More than 120 people attended a recent history lecture on the Blackwater Tragedy, an incident that took place in the locality during the War of Independence, in Browne’s Pub. Eminent historian Tom Toomey who has carried out lengthy research into the tragedy was introduced to those in attendance by Cathal Crowe. Tom proceeded to tell of the events that took place on Feb. 20th 1921 which culminated in the deaths of two Thomondgate teenagers at Blackwater Mill. A series of photographic images and maps were projected onto a large screen and afterwards commemorative scrolls were sold at a cost of €20. Funds generated will be used to erect a monument at Blackwater on Easter Sunday. Parteen GAA: All members of Parteen GAA Club aged between 12-16 and their parents are invited to attend an ASAP Programme meeting in Parteen National School on Wednesday 6th March at 7.30pm.

Parteen GAA Club said, “ The Alcohol & Substance Abuse Prevention (ASAP) Programme is a joint venture by the GAA and the Health Service Executive that aims to reduce the harm being caused by alcohol and other drugs.”

The program will start with a talk from the Garda drugs unit for 12-16 year olds in the club and their parents.

Well done to Henry O’ Boyle who is driving this for Parteen GAA Club as ASAP Officer.

Pitch development at Parteen: Parteen GAA club members are asked to note that the main pitches will be sanded this weekend and are therefore unplayable.

Parteen St.Nicholas Lotto Draw: The Lotto took place at Larkin’s Sunday 24th February.There was no winner.The numbers drawn were 4, 5, 18 & 27.

Come Dine with me: Season two of the popular “Come Dine with me” kicked off two weeks ago with Fran O’ Donnell and Padhraic Hastings going head to head. Well done to both men who cooked up a treat, the winner of this round being Fran O’ Donnell. Thursday next will see Sean Ahern go head to head with Mike Hopwood at 9.30pm in the Daggers Bar, Blackwater.

Community Games Parteen St. Nicholas/Ardnacrusha: The Talent Competition took place on Saturday last. It was a great success. The high standard from all of the competitors resulted in a fantastic evening’s entertainment.

The results are as follows: Solo singing category: Gold medal went to Kara Madden, silver went to Sarah Connolly and bronze went to Leah Cleary.

Group singing category: Gold medals went to Sarah Connolly, Kate Shanahan, Sophie Shanahan and Carol Gilligan. Silver medals went to Bronagh and Clodagh McMahon aka “Sister Act.”

Solo music category: Gold medal went to Sarah Hall, silver medal went to Sinead Barry and bronze medal went to Emma Sheehan.

Group music category: Gold medals went to Jack Kirwin, Sean Connolly and Tom Collins.

Solo Dance: Gold medal went to Catherine Hickey.

Group Dance: Gold medals went to Anna McCarthy, Chloe Graham, Carol Gilligan, Sarah Connolly, Amy Mulcahy and Kara Madden.

All Gold and Silver medal winners will go forward to Clare County Finals which will be held on Sunday 24th March 2013 at Sixmilebridge GAA Hall. Best of luck to everyone and congratulations to all who took part in the competition.
