GARDAI in Limerick are to continue a crackdown against brothels linked to on-line escort agencies after shutting down three operations in the city and one in the county over the past two weeks.

Two Polish, two Czech and two Romanian women were questioned by gardai last week following raids on three suspected brothels being run from apartments in the city centre.

Two were in the Mount Kennett area and the other on Harvey’s Quay. And one Brazilian and one Spanish woman were arrested in Newcastle West on Wednesday after gardai raided an apartment in the South Quay area of the town.

They are believed to have been running a brothel for six weeks.

A Garda source said the women were not suspected of street-walking but of advertising sexual services on-line through a supposed escort website.

There was no early indication that the women had been trafficked or coerced into prostitution, the source said.

And gardai have information that at least 10 more brothels linked to escort websites are operating in the Limerick area.
