RAMBLING HOUSE: Another very successful Rambling House was held at Monagea Parish Hall on Thursday night last. Performers from all over County Limerick, parts of Cork and Kerry all attended. Once again the standard was very high and a very enjoyable evening was had. It is a pity that more people from the parish do not come along to be part of the audience for these great shows. You would also be helping the parish hall fund.
DANCING CLASSES: Dancing classes will resume in Monagea Parish Hall on Thursday September 12th. The classes will run from 8.30pm to 10.30pm. The organisers are looking forward to seeing many of their old faces returning refreshed from the summer break. They would also like to see new faces joining the class.
OLD PHOTOS: The Parish Hall Committee are looking for any old photos of the hall when it was Monagea National School. Some class photos may have been taken with the school in the background. An official opening of the refurbished hall is due shortly and the photos will be used on that occasion. Any photos received will be returned. If you have any photos please give them to any of the following as soon as possible – Claire Scanlon, Joan O’Callaghan, Denis Mulcahy, Pat Enright, Ruth O’Mahony and Pat Harnett.
AEROBICS AND FITNESS CLASSES: Aerobics and fitness classes will resume in Monagea Parish Hall on Tuesday September 17th. The class will run for one hour from 7.30 to 8.30pm. Last year this class proved to be very popular and we look forward to seeing many returning and some new members also.
CEILI: A Ceili will be held in Halla Tadhg Gaelach Tournafulla on Friday September 13th. Music on the night will be provided by the Striolán Ceili Band. Dancing from 9.30pm to 1am. Teas and refreshments will be served. Everyone welcome.
ADARE TO SURVIVE WITH CLIONA’S FOUNDATION: Adare to Survive is a 7.5km military style obstacle course taking place in Clonshire Equestrian Centre, Adare, Co Limerick on Sunday 29 September. Cliona’s Foundation which provides financial assistance to the families of critically ill children is the charity partner and participants are invited to Endeavour | Endure | Enjoy a unique physical and mental challenge, individually or part of a 4 person team, to raise funds for a charity or club of their choice. WEST LIMERICK COMMUNITY RADIO: The AGM of West Limerick Community Radio will be held on Tuesday 24th September at 8p.m. in the Desmond Complex. Any Submissions/Questions should be handed into the station in a sealed envelope by the 17th September, to be answered on the night.
KNOCKFIERNA HERITAGE SOCIETY: Knockfierna Heritage Society will hold their annual outing to Cahir Castle, The Swiss Cottage, Rock of Cashel, Holy Cross Abbey on Sunday 29th September. Previous outings have proved to be most enjoyable occasions. Mr. Philip Lynch of Kilkenny will be tour guide for the day. ORAL HISTORY TRAINING: West Limerick Resources will be running an Oral History Recording Training Initiative this autumn. Training will consist of two elements. Participants will develop Oral History Interviewing techniques as well as examine the legal and ethical issues relevant to gathering Oral History. The second element of the training will focus on digital voice recording and editing techniques. Training will also explore how oral history can contribute to the local heritage of communities and identify suitable ways of showcasing their research. Training is expected to begin in October and to run one evening per week for 10 weeks. The course is free of charge and open to people living in the West Limerick area. FEENAGH/KILMEEDY GATHERING EVENT: The Feenagh/Kilmeedy Heritage Committee is hosting a two day celebration of their rich local heritage to mark Gathering 2013 on Friday September 20th and Saturday September 21st. The celebration will kick off at 8pm on Friday the 20th in the Feenagh Community Centre where Professor Liam Irwin will deliver a talk on the History of Feenagh/Kilmeedy Parish. The evening’s events will also feature a slideshow display and a range of memorabilia dating back to the 1830’s including old photographs, letters and a video on the old creamery. This will be followed on Saturday the 21st by a local heritage walk, again led by Professor Irwin starting at the new school in Feenagh and tracing the history and stories behind the various houses and structures between the new and old school which is now the newly redeveloped community centre. Both events will incorporate a social element with refreshments available and an opportunity for people to share their knowledge of the history of the local area. Events are free of charge and open to all with a special invitation to former parishioners living around Ireland & abroad!
TIDY TOWNS NETWORK TRAINING: Communities taking part in Tidy Towns or environmental activities in the West Limerick area are invited to take part in a one day training session on Invasive Species which will take place on this coming Saturday September 7th as part of on-going training and support being offer by West Limerick Resources and An Taisce through the West Limerick Tidy Towns Network. PROGRAMME ON MENTAL HEALTH: To mark World Mental Health Day (October 10th) a radio programme, produced by the staff of the West Limerick Primary Health Care Project for Travellers, will be aired by West Limerick 102fm on October 2nd after the 11am news. It will feature Thomas McCann from the Traveller Counselling Service and Aisling McMahon, Clinical Psychologist who recently completed a PhD thesis on mental health in the Traveller community.
