INTERMEDIATE HURLERS LOSE OUT : On Sunday last Blackrock played Dromin Athlacca in the County Intermediate Hurling Championship Semi Final in Bruff and were bidding to reach the final for the first time since their 1993, but it was Dromin Athlacca who proved best to win by 1.16 to 1.14 in a game that they led from start to finish. Dromin Athlacca were the early pacesetters and scored the opening point of the game within seconds of the throw in, this was followed by a goal shortly after, this score was to prove vital as it kept daylight between the sides throughout the game. Blackrock opened their account with a pointed free from Dylanm Dawson followed by a similar score from centreback Richard McCarthy, before Dromin Athlacca had points from a free and a 65 to increase their lead to four points. A Blackrock point from Brendan Hennessy was cancelled out by a similar score for Dromin Athlacca from outfield. At this stage Blackrock hit a number of scoring chances from play and frees wide and it was to prove costly as Dromin Athlacca scored five points without reply before Paudie Leahy pointed a Blackrock free which was quickly replied to by a Dromin Athlacca point from play, Blackrock had two points from frees from Paudie Leahy to leave the half time score Dromin Athlacca 1.10 Blackrock 0.6.
Blackrock had a very good start to the second half, with points from Paudie Leahy (free and 65) and two from Ruairi O’Shaughnessy , while Dromin Athlacca added two points from play and a free to leave five points between the sides (1.12 to 0.10). A point for Dromin Athlacca was followed by three Blackrock points, Pauide Leahy two frees and Ruairi O’Shaughness from play to leave only three points between the sides. Bothy sides made a number of changes, the most notable being the switch of Richard McCarthy for Blackrock but it was Dromin Athlacca with a pointed free that ceased the moment and added three points, two point from play before Richard McCarthy pointed for Blackrock to reduce the deficit to five points. Blackrock went back on the attackj and were awarded a penalty which Paudie Leahy sent to the net but it was too little too late as the final whistle sounded that heralded a Dromin Athlacca win over a Blackrock side that will rue their missed chances in the opening half.
