Glin Rovers hit the ground running from the KO in this game. Sheagh O Connor found the back of the net in the first minute from a cross from Johnny O Sullivan but it was ruled out for offside whilst in the 7th minute Paddy O Callahan set up David Daly who just shot over the crossbar. Paddy O Callaghan forced a good save from the Athea Keeper on 20 minutes also. On 21 minutes Ben Sheehan made a great run in to the box only to see his shot saved by the keeper for a corner to Glin.
Glin went 1-0 up on 23 minutes, a great goal from over 20 yards out by Johnny O Sullivan. Andrew Fitzgerald went close a few minutes later but his shot went just wide. Johnny made it 2-0 to Glin on 26 minutes with a wonder goal from the goal line near the corner flag. It was the nearest thing I have seen to Marco Van Bastens wonder goal in the EURO 88 Final for Holland V Russia.
While it was all Glin attack in the first half Athea played very well in the second half. Shane Cregan made 3 vital interceptions early on in the half and Jack Fitzgerald made 2 great tackles inside the box, one of which almost surely saved a goal. Sheagh O Connor was bossing midfield in the second half and MJ Ambrose had a very good attacking second half today, very lively. Tomas Woulfe is getting and better, he was very composed at the heart of the defence today. Sheagh had good company in midfield today, Ben Sheehan made some great runs while Andrew Fitzgerald had a good game today, a constant threat to Athea in the second Half. David Daly was unlucky not to score today and was full of running up front alongside Johnny O Sullivan. Shane O Sullivan was good in goal today he made two fine saves today. I would have to give Paddy O Callaghan our Man of the match today as he was very strong today both in defence and as an attacking threat. John Daniel Hickey came on in the 50th minute and showed great tenacity in winning the ball to set up an attack from MJ Ambrose’s good ball to Johnny but the keeper saved. Fionn Henderson came on for Andrew Fitzgerald and made some vital blocks in the second half as Athea pressed. JD Cregan and Michael Cregan also came on for Glin and it was Michael that scored our third with a fine solo effort. Dara Leahy also came on late in the game for Glin and did well in midfield.
