ST. PATRICK’S FESTIVAL: Ballina-Killaloe St. Patrick’s Festival will take on March 16th and 17th. The festival will build on our already hugely successful St Patrick’s Day parade and will introduce two new key events (and much more) in the build up to being a key event in the local, regional and national programme of events for 2014, the commemoration year of the Battle of Clontarf and it’s greatest hero, Brian Ború. As well as the usual and often hilarious topical themes we see in our parade, we also suggest that this year any clubs, organisations and business events and promotions, include relevant Patron Saint/Gathering/Brian Ború/Viking/cultural heritage ‘themes’ in planning floats etc. Additional key events will include a Comhaltas Concert on the evening of March 16th March in aid of the Tipperary Fleadh, which will run in Ballina this year, and will feature some spectacular musicians from home and nationwide. Hosting the County Fleadh is a huge achievement for the town and will see hundreds of musicians and their families travelling to Ballina-Killaloe in May. Details of venue will be given next week.
There will also be a performance by our very own Killaloe Ballina Community Orchestra under the able direction of Boris Hunka and Diane Daly, supported by Paul Smyth and the many aspiring musicians in our communities. It will be a busy weekend with lots of smaller events and promotions so spread the word and invite your friends and family to Killaloe Ballina for the St. Patrick’s weekend!

The Thursday Cubs spent last weekend in Violet Hill in Broadford. Saturday was spent hiking the 10.5km circuit up and over Violet Hill, into the village of Broadford and returning again to Violet hill. To loosen up the limbs after that hike, on Sunday they hiked from Violet Hill to Doon Lake and back. All Cubs were tired and delighted with their achievement on their return to Killaloe.
