FIRST HOLY COMMUNION : The First Holy Communion Class will receive their First Holy Communion in St. Andrew’s Church on Saturday 10 May 2014. There are at present 24 chiuldren preparing for this very important day in their lives. (Enrolment takes place on Thursday 24 October).

CONFIRMATION DAY : Bishop Brendan Leahy will confirm 31 Children from Fifth and Sixth Class on Tuesday 27 May 2014 at St. Andrew’s Church. A Programme of preparation will be presented to the Parents of the Coinfirmation Classes in the coming months.

KILFINANE JUNIOR CHESS CLUB : The Chess Club reopened last Saturday. The new Beginner Class is 5.30pm to 6.15pm. If any child wishes to learn chess it is very important that they come to the class next Saturday 12 October, because we had the largest beginner class since the club opened, and it will be difficult for latecomers to catch up on what has been taught already. The Improver Class is 6.15pm to 7.10pm and the Experienced Class is 7.10pm to 8pm

KILFINANE YOUTH CLUB : Kilfinane Youth Club needs you, Local Transition Year students have for quite some time, committed themselves to the development of a Youth Club in Kilfinane. Limerick Youth Services has come in to support them in this process and will provide on going support and training for the club once it has been developed. The number of volunteers supporting the club will dictate the number of young people attending the club. With this in mind we are having a volunteer evening on this Thursday evening at 7pm in Scoil Pol. If you are unable tp attend the meeting but interested in volunteering you can contact Eithne on 087 0549343. It is vital that we get enough volunteers as Club will be unable to go ahead otherwise.

LOCAL HURLER RECEIVES ALL STAR HURLING NOMINATION : Congratulations are extended to local hurler Richard McCarthy, who has been nominated for a GPA/ GAA Star Award for 2013, playing at Full Back for Limerick, he is one of forty five nominations which includes six other Limerick players, Tom Condon, Wayne McNamara, Gavin O’Mahony, Paul Browne, James Ryan and Graham Mulcahy, Richard had a very good year in the County colours during the year with some fine displays during the provincial championship, including Man of the Match Award in Munster Championship Semi Final against Tipperary.and Opel GPA Award for month of June as well as another fine display in the Number 3 Shirt when Limerick won the Munster Title for the first time since 1996 defeating Cork in the final at Pairc na nGael on Sunday 14 July. Richard was also a nominee for the 2012 All Star Team.

WALK OF LIFE for MILFORD HOSPICE : The inaugural 5km Walk of Life in aid of Milford Hospice will be held in Kilfinane on Saturday October 19 at 12noon, assembling at The Church Car Park, all walkers are welcome to participate. Fund Raising Table Quiz (Team of Four) will be held in Scoil Pol on Friday October 18 at 8.30pm. all clubs, Committees, Organisations, Businesses, together with the people of the parish asked to play their part in making these events a success for such a worthy cause. FOOTBALLERS BOW OUT : Blackrock with an under strength side played Ballylanders in the Semi Final of the South Junior ‘A’ Football championship on Tuesday evening 1 October under lights at Kilbreedy and lost out on a score line of 2.10 to 1.06. The early exchanges were even with both sides scoring three points each, the Blackrock scores coming from Kevin Palmer Barry O’Shaughness and a Sean Palmer free. Ballylanders added five unanswered points, four from frees to lead at the interval by 0.08 to 0.03. Points from Paudie Leahy and Kenneth Douglas reduced the deficit to three points but Ballylanders were awarded a penalty which resulted in a goal, Barry O’Shaughneesy pointed for Blackrock before Ballylanders had their second goal followed by a pointed free. Blackrock fullforward Kenneth Douglas had his sides final score, a goal followed by a point for Ballylanders from a free to give them a win and a place in the final with their neighbours Galtee Gaels, which the Gaels won on Sunday last.Team and scorers James McGrath, David Healy, T G Ryan, James Heffernan, Sean Parkinson, Niall Moloney, Martin Hennessy, Richard McCarthy, Niall O’Riordan, Barry O’Shaughnessy (0.02), Sean Palmer (0.01f), Vincent Herbert, Josh Slattery, Kenneth Douglas (1.01), Kevin Palmer (0.01). BLACKROCK CAMOGIE CLUB : Blackrock Camogie Club will hold their Annual General Meeting on Sunday 10 November at 8pm in the Pavilion, Michael Fox Memorial Park. The meeting is open to all persons over the age of 16. The club are inviting players to make it known to the club if they are interested in forming a Minor or a Junior team for the season coming (2014). There will be a meeting held on this Saturday 12 October at 8.30pm in the Pavilion. The club will need a minimum of 20 players to make the commitment, before the Junior team will be registered, anyone interested should attend the meeting. All new players also welcome. The club in conjunction with Blackrock GAA Club will be holding a clothes, textiles and book collection on Saturday 7 December in the Sportsfield. All funds raised will go to the running and maintenance of the Michael Fox Memorial Park, so please keep all your old clothes and books and donate generously. The club will be taking in the items two weeks before 7 December so feel free to contact your local GAA Club or Camogie Club representative.

KILFINANE ATHLETIC CLUB: Intermediate Cross Country this Sunday, October 13.

Kilfinane AC are hosting the County Intermediate & Masters Cross Country on this Sunday 13 October. The course is in excellent condition and here’s hoping that the rain will stay away. Thanks to all who helped with course preparations this weekend. Club members were again very busy across a range of events this week with the following highlights and results. Bruff Longboat 10K and 80k cycle :There was a good turnout for this event which saw great support from locals and club members both on and off the course to raise funds for the Oncology Unit in University Hospital Limerick. 2 of the top runners on the local scene Shane Simcox and Mike Cunningham led home the field on a very humid day. In the 10K Seamus Hourigan continued to impress with an excellent time of 38:58 and Fifth place overall. Pat Irwin had a fine run in a time of 41:29, other times posted included John Meehan 44:00, Sean Manning 46:36, Ben Begley 50:07, Agne Bulyceva 51:58, Pau 53:41, James O Connor 55:54, Una Power 60:29 and Laura Kelliher 60:33. Well done all and Niamh Doody, Paul Ryan, Bob Creed, James Gubbins, Patricia Wade, Seamus Hourigan and Joanne Browne who helped out with the event.

Human Race this sunday: Well done to the large contingent of club runners who took part in the 10K, 20K, 30K Human Race events , which to place around University Limerick Campus. Results will be posted in next weeks notes. Glasgow Great Scottish Run :Patrick O Sullivan after a recent comeback from injury posted an excellent time of 1:34:46 in the Great Scottish run half marathon. The race was won by the great Haile Gebrselassie in 61.09. Well done to Amy O’ Sullivan who completed the 10k. Killarney Adventure Race : Well done to Adrian Hennessy who was Third home in the Killarney Adventure Race 69km race and member of winning team, an event which included mountain running, kayaking and biking. Upcoming Events : Macroom Park Run takes place every Saturday at 9.30am (Free Event, pre register online) Munster U23 & Novice Cross Country, Limerick racecourse, Sunday 27 October. Training : Training on the Cross Country Course will take place this Wed. at 6pm. Saturday training will continue at 9am in Dromin. Midweek training continues on Thursdays at the track around GAA pitch in Kilfinane Come along and give it a try this Thursday at 7pm. Midweek training is ideal for beginners

LIMERICK WEST G.I.Y. : Limerick West GIY with the aim of inspiring people to grow their own food is back indoors for the winter months as we return to D & M Garden Centre, Croagh on Thursday October 17 where the subject for discussion will be on Wild Foods along with all the usual topics.. The meeting will start at 7pm sharp and all are welcome from the beginner to the experienced old hand. As with all GIY meetings there is no charge to join in.
