OUR LADY OF LOURDES SCHOOL: The time of year has come for the classes to start arranging their school tours. We all remember that fantastic day out at the end of the year, where we could go and learn outside the classroom, joined by our friends and teacher. This year, 4th class is making their way to Tralee. It is always popular with the kids, because they get a chance to experience firsthand the things they have been learning about in geography class. Crag Cave in Castleisland will be visited along the way and the children will have a chance to see real stalagmites and stalagtites.

Senior Infants: are making a trip to the Old rectory in Croom, which promises a very exciting day out. The Old rectory always welcomes our kids with orienteering style treasure / scavenger hunts, sand pit play including the erupting Volcano and play on a range of equipment in the garden and the woods. Time passes fast as the kids are kept busy, having lots of fun and enjoying the variety of activities offered.

A film crew visited the school recently and spent a day interviewing children on camera. We are delighted that a number of our children have been selected to be interviewed by Ray Darcy on a brand new series of ‘The School Around the Corner’. Lee Nolan, Junior Okafor, Shane Franklin and Robert McNamara have been chosen to travel to the RTE studios with their families for a filming session at the end of the month. Well done boys. We’re looking forward to supporting you all as you represent our school.

We are also very proud of Kate Daly who won an All Ireland medal for Boxing in the National Girl’s Championship in Dublin last weekend. Kate is a wonderful example to us all, children and adults. She applies herself to everything she does, be it training or schoolwork and always does her very best. We held an assembly in school this week, where Kate’s achievements were marked by the school. On behalf of the school, Mrs. Sheila Gallagher, principal, presented Kate with a beautiful silver charm bracelet and a certificate to mark our pride. Well done Kate!

More good news came this week with the marriage of Ms. Mairead Normoyle. Ms. Normoyle has been teaching in Our Lady of Lourdes for many years and has taught mostly third and fifth classes. Before she departed for her own special celebrations, she gave a party for her class to celebrate her nuptials. Of course, 5th class made a beautiful wedding card, wishing her and her new husband all the best. Congratulations Ms. Normoyle!

The parent’s classes have taken on new life as we enter the final weeks of the school year. The parent’s room is full of sawdust, as the mothers have shown great talent in the area of woodwork. Brian Mitchell, a past pupil of our school, is teaching the ladies basic woodwork, and we have already produced a great array of birdboxes, planters and even kennels.
