KNOCKAINEY AFC: History was made last Thursday at 6:30 pm, when Knockainey AFC fielded its first girl’s soccer teams. Knockainey girls U6s & U8s played an away friendly against Kilmallock. In difficult weather conditions, the 9 aside U8s match finished in a one all draw, while the U6s scored twice. The U8 girls resisted intense pressure in the first half but despite heroic efforts from their first half keeper, Alice and the back line of Laura, Niamh and Grace they went down to an early goal. However, our girls showed great courage and determination and stuck to their task with a midfield trio of Megan, Aine and Blánaid supplying some great ball to the forward duo of Abby and Alanna. Although the Kilmallock goal was peppered by numerous shots on target, Kilmallock’s narrow lead was maintained to half time, due mainly to their keeper’s skills. In the second half in worsening conditions, Knockainey came into their own. It soon became obvious that they could not be denied. Sensing they were gaining the upper hand, the Knockainey team flooded the Kilmallock goal. Following one of many huge goal kicks from Megan, the second half keeper, the ball eventually fell to Aine who showed great skill to volley it from the edge of the box into the top right hand corner of the Kilmallock net. The girls were delighted as were the vocal Knockainey supporters. Despite the continued efforts of our historic team the match ended 1-1.
Meanwhile our four U6s combined with Kilmallock U6s to play an exciting, high tempo match that ended 5-2. Rita found the net twice and though the efforts of Julie, Ava and Brona merited goals, it was not to be. A big thanks to Kilmallock for hosting us and to the U8s referee who let the game flow. Both matches were played in great sporting spirit. Rest assured that the future of Knockainey girl’s soccer is in safe hands
