KILLALOE NATIVE HONOURED IN THE US: On Saturday, May 11 Killaloe native, Séamus Connolly was awarded The Ellis Island Medal of Honour from the National Ethnic Coalition of Organisations (NECO) at a special Award Ceremony, held on Ellis Island. This Award was made in recognition of his distinguished career as one of the World’s most respected master Irish musicians. The prestigious Medals are presented annually to American citizens for their outstanding contributions to their communities, their nation and the world. Former recipients include six Presidents of the US: Nobel Prize winners: athletes: leaders of industry: artists and individuals whose work has made a lasting impact on humanity. Séamus is a faculty member of Boston College since 1990 and is currently Sullivan Artist-in-Residence and director of Boston University Irish Studies Music programs.

FLEADH CHEOIL 2013: Ballina’s ‘first’ County Fleadh was one of the most successful events ever held in the town. Throughout the weekend there was a great ‘buzz’ in the town as hundreds of competitors took part in competitions in Ballina Primary School and in the Parish Hall. The music sessions in many pubs throughout Ballina-Killaloe added to the atmosphere. For the past two weeks the organising committee has held events throughout Ballina and Killaloe and all are thrilled of the level of support they have received.

At the Official Launch on Friday, May 17 in Ballina Primary School Hall the large attendance included Senator Labhrás Ó Murchú and his wife, Una: Pat Loughman (Cathaoirleach Chontae Thiobraid Árann): Cllr. Phyll Bugler: Cllr Conor Delaney: organising committee – Paddy Collins, Pat Loughman, Barbara Farrell, Joe Troy, Pascal Gray, Donnchadh Ó Cinnéide, Paul Mac Partlin, Ned Quinn, Noel Bugler, Paul Smyth, Brona Moriarty, Jane Seymour, Mairéad Kennedy, Bridie Mc Grath, Mark Forde, Brendan Quinn, Sheila Lonergan, Anne Quinn, Tom Cleary and Nora Troy. It was heartening to see so many young people performing on stage and special praise must be attributed to Mary Mc Auliffe whose large group of musicians/dancers/singers from Newport-Birdhill and environs were truly spectacular. This group recently won the All Ireland Pléaracha Competition.

Details of local successes in the 2013 Tipperary Fleadh and acknowledgements will be given next week. Congratulations to the organising committee for a job very well done!

CAPTAIN KIRWAN CUP WINNERS: Last weekend, May 17-19, Killaloe Coast Guard was represented by Jason Kenny, Mike Jones and Joe Dolan at the Joint Search and Rescue Competitions (JSAR), held in Dingle. The Inter Division Team C, which consisted of four Coast Guard Volunteers from South Sector, East sector, Michael Jones (West Sector) and a Northern Ireland representative, were winners of the Captain Kirwan Cup, which is awarded to the best overall team.

Forty-eight competitors from each division, - Malin, Valentia, Dublin and Northern Ireland – took part in the 2013 JSAR games, which aims to increase the professionalism of all participants and to enhance co-operation between both Services through friendly competition. Killaloe Coast Guard Unit members have been part of the Captain Kirwan Cup winning team in 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 and also won the JSAR Shield in 2011. Mike Jones also won the best ‘Team Leader’ overall.

NEW PLAYGROUND FOR BALLINA: A New State of the art Children’s playground will be installed in Ballina Riverside Park during the Summer. The contract has been awarded to Cavanagh’s Playground Equipment, Ballingarry Co. Tipperary. “This playground will be fantastic for the children of Ballina and the many tourist families who visit Ballina “ stated Cllr Phyll Bugler

Jim Watkins, Cllr Phyll Bugler and Pascalene Cahalane of Ballina Tidy Towns have worked extremely hard to secure the funding for this playground and are very grateful to North Tipperary County Council for their assistance in this matter. The area manager and the area engineers are to be commended for their advice and technical expertise regarding this playground.

FUN RUN: The annual St. Anne’s Community College 10k fundraising Fun Run/Walk on Wednesday last saw hundreds of teenagers, teachers, parents and past pupils take to the roads of Creevroe/Garraunboy during the only rain-free hour of the day. First home was Lowell Ryan for the second year-in-a row: Laura Collins and Cathal Reid were the first adults to finish while the first teachers home were Rosie Foley and John Caplis. The management and staff at St. Anne’s wish to thank all who participated in/supported the event: Niamh Briggs, Irish Women’s Rugby ‘star’ full back and kicker who led the ‘run’: and sponsors, Lakeside Leisure Centre, Fionn Uisce, Mc Keogh’s and Planet Tri.

ART EXHIBITION: An Exhibition entitled “Memories”, featuring the recent works (in oil) by local artist, Marian Conroy, Ballina will open at Quay Arts on this Friday, May 24 and will run for one week. Marian’s collection is inspired by her own personal recollections and, motivated by tales of old and more recent stories, promises to be a captivating and interesting exhibition.

FREE PRE-SCHOOL YEAR: Little Rascals Playschool (Ballina Parish Hall) has limited places available for September 2013. Children born between February 2, 2009 and June 30, 2010 are entitled to a free pre-school year under the ECCE scheme. Interested parents should phone 087 9427364.

KILLALOE CAR PARK UPDATE: Following the opposition of initial plans for a new car park on Abbey Street, Killaloe by Millstream residents, East Clare councillors and Timmy Dooley TD, Clare County Council has re-submitted revised proposals for the development. It is proposed to have an entrance to car park at Abbey Street rather than at the entrance to Millstream Housing Estate. There are also plans to install a new pedestrian crossing on the Convent Hill.

The new application is at a pre-validation stage in the Council’s Planning Department. A site notice must be erected and submissions from the public may then be received during a six-week public consultation period.

BALLINA CÚL CAMP: Registration is now open for this year’s CÚL CAMP, which will take place in Ballina from July 1 to July 5. This event is open to all Primary School children from 6 years up. You may register online by going to the Cúl Camp website and following the link to Ballina Camp. A €5 discount is available if you have a code from the special Kellogg’s cereal boxes (online booking only). Registration is also available at the Club Shop after training on Saturday mornings. Camp numbers are limited so early booking is advisable to avoid disappointment.

BALLINA CAMOGIE: July 5th-7th will be a very exciting weekend for Ballina Camogie Club with our u14 girls participating in Féile 2013. A number of fundraising activities will take place in the coming weeks with the first of these on this Saturday, May 25. “Bring a Cake, Buy a Cake” sale will take place in the GAA complex from 10am to11.30am. Cakes may be left in the Clubhouse from 9.30am. Your support will be greatly appreciated!.
