SWIM DAY: National Swim Day in conjunction with RTE’s Operation Transformation is taking place at Shannon Leisure Centre this Saturday from 2pm to 6pm. CANDLEMAS DAY: On February 2, Candlemas Day, the blessing of candles for home and church use will take place. The blessing of candles will also take place at the 6.30pm vigil mass on Saturday.

QUIT TOBACCO: The Quit Tobacco Group will meet in Shannon on Tuesday February 11 between 1pm and 2pm contact 065-6865841 or 6865839 for full details, email clarehealthpromotion@hse.ie.

BLESSING OF THROATS: The annual Blessing of Throats will take place after all masses on Monday, February 3.

MONTHS MIND: The months mind mass for Susan Waters, Cluain Airne and St. Conaire’s School will be on this Friday night at 7pm in SS John & Paul church. On Saturday evening at 6.30pm for Ron O’Leary, Fearnog and also for Larry Stewart, Cronan Grove. For Joe Stewart, Cronan Grove on Sunday at 12.15pm. All masses will be in SS John & Paul church.

JC SUPERSTAR: Shannon Musical Society’s 2014 production, Jesus Christ Superstar, will open on Sunday February 16 in St Patrick’s Comprehensive School. Tickets will be on sale in the ticket office which will open in SkyCourt Shopping Centre from Monday, February 10. Telephone bookings will also be taken from that date on 086 214 2554.

WAXATHON: Waxing night in the Goalpost on Saturday 1st February from 8pm, following the first round of the Winter Hurling League, weather permitting, at 6.30.

The hurling league was scheduled to begin last Saturday night but the heavy rain of recent weeks has left the ground too wet for matches.

Anyone who would like to take part in the Waxathon should get in touch with Gary Fitzgibbon on 0873608569. The event will be getting underway at 8pm followed by entertainment with Atomic Chicken. Promises to be great fun so please spread the word. All money raised will be for the Wolfe Tones games fund. With so many teams starting back training it is important that as much as possible is raised for equipment etc..., so please donate what you can. The club is hoping to raise €2000

REMEMBRANCE: The Annual mass for all who worked in Shannon schools who have died will take place in the Convent Oratory, Drumgeely is on Friday, February 7.

HOST FAMILY: Home Share Clare is asking if anyone could provide a supportive, caring environment within their own home? Home Share Clare is a family based support service developed by the Brothers of Charity offering short breaks to children and adults with disability. Some people provide day breaks while others provide overnight breaks. Assessment, training and support will be provided. SEISIUN: The monthly Seisiun will take place in the Old Bar in Wolfe Tones na Sionna on Wednesday night February 5 at 9pm.

DINNER DANCE: The Shannon Senior Citizens Annual Dinner Dance will take place on Wednesday February 5 at the Oakwood Hotel at 6.30pm. The club is open on Monday and Wednesday afternoons from 1pm. Tickets are available from any committee member.

LÁ FÉILE BRIDE: On Saturday at the 12 noon mass in Mary Immaculate church the Blessing and distribution of St. Bridget’s Crosses will take place.

GRANDPARENTS DAY: On Friday 31 January at 9.30am St. Senan’s school will participate in the morning mass in Mary Immaculate Church. This will be followed at 10.15am with a Grandparents’ Day celebration in the school.

SIT & KNIT:On Tuesday evenings in the Shannon Family Resource Centre the Sit ‘n’ Knit Women’s Circle meets from 7.30pm to 10.00. Also on Tuesday mornings from 10.30 to 12.30 the Men’s Shed group get together. To get all the details contact the Centre on 061 -707600.

ENROLMENT:Parents of children who will be starting primary school in September 2014 and who have not yet registered their child with a school should now contact their preferred school. There are six primary schools in Shannon, plenty of choice!

LEISURE CENTRE: Shannon Leisure Centre is featured in Life and Fitness magazine regarding the recently opened new strength and conditioning facility.

WOLFE TONES LOTTO: The weekly Lotto draw results for the Jackpot of €5,400 on Monday night were : Numbers drawn : 6, 10, 14, 21. No Winner. Lucky Dip winners were: Anne McKenna, Marian Hayes, Siobhan & Pauline, Matty Doyle and Mike McKey. Next draw will be on Monday February 3 for the Jackpot of €5,600.

TOASTMASTERS: The Shannon Toastmasters group will meet at 8pm on Wednesday February 5 in the Oakwood Arms Hotel.

GOSPEL CHOIR: Shannon Gospel Choir have their first event of 2014 on Saturday, March 1 in the Lime Tree Theatre at Mary Immaculate College when they will be performing at the Rebecca Storm Show.

RECENT DEATHS: Sympathy to the family of Rosemary Campbell, Tullyglass Crescent who was buried on Friday. To Bernie Casey, Ballycaseymanor on the death of her mother Margaret Walsh, Duagh, Co. Kerry. May they rest in peace.
