Church News: Mass in Broadford for the month of February 2014 will be on Saturday evenings at 7.30pm and Sunday mornings at 9.30am. The reader for Saturday Feb 1st is Helen Lacy Pierce and the Eucharistic Ministers are Ciss Collins & Rita Barrett. Confirmation Day: The Sacrament of Confirmation will be administered to the pupils of fifth and sixth classes of both Broadford and Dromcollogher National schools on Tuesday February 11th at I pm in St Bartholomew’s church Dromcollogher by his Lordship Bishop Brendan Leahy Bishop of Limerick.

The Feast of St. Blaise: Monday February 3 is the feast of St Blaise and the blessing of the throats will take place at all masses in the parish next week. St Blaise a martyr of the early church was an Armenian and according to tradition as he was being taken into to custody during the persecution of the Christians in that country by the Roman’s, a distraught mother whose only child was choking on a fishbone, threw herself at the feet of St. Blaise and implored his intercession, touched by her grief he offered up prayers and the child was cured. Consequently St. Blaise is invoked for protection against injuries and illnesses of the throats ever since. The blessing of St. Blaise is generally performed by a priest or a lay person by holding two candles held in a crossed position and placed against the throat and at the same time the following prayer is recited: “All Mighty God at the intercession of St. Blaise, Bishop and Martyr perverse you from all infections of the throat and from all other afflictions”, followed by the sign of the cross.

Candlemas Day: Saturday 1st and Sunday February 2 is the Feast of the Presentation of Our Lord also known as Candlemas Day will see the annual blessing of candles which will be used in the church during the coming year at all masses at this week-end and the blessing of candles which will be used in the home will also take place at the week-end so bring your candles to mass this week-end.

Clerk’s Collection: The annual Broadford Parish Clerk’s collection will be taken up at all masses in Broadford on Saturday February 1st and

Sunday February 2. Your generously will be greatly appreciated.

National School Enrolment Forms: Enrolment application forms are available from Scoil Mhuire Broadford for parents who are interested in enrolling their children for the coming year 2014/2015. Parish Pastoral Team: An open meeting regarding the formation of a Pastoral Teams will be held on Monday night next the 3rd February at 7.30pm in the Hall Dromcollogher. At this meeting the role of a Pastoral Team in our Parish will be discussed and if you are interested in becoming a member please come along to this meeting. Three training sessions on the work of a Pastoral Team will follow and they have been arranged on the following dates: (1) Wednesday evening February 12th in the Community Centre Broadford from 8 o’clock to 9.30. (2) Thursday evening February 20th in Dromcollogher Hall from 8 o’clock to 9.30. (3) Monday evening March 3rd in the Community Centre Broadford from 8 o’clock to 9.30.

Active Retirement A.G.M.: Broadford and District Active Retirement Association will hold their Annual General Meeting on Monday February 3 at the Day Care Centre Broadford at 7.30pm. A review of the past year will take place and officers for 2014 will be elected. Everybody will be welcome.

Health and Beauty: A health and Beauty course will take place in the Broadford Enterprise Centre and the starting date is February 16 and the course will run for 12 weeks every Thursday evenings from 7pm to 9pm. If interested please contact KAREN on 087/6319893.

Limerick Senior Football: Congratulations to Seanie Buckley from the local Dromcollogher/Broadford club who will captain the Limerick Senior Football team for the third year in a row. The past two years he has led Limerick to two National League Division 4 titles and long may your success continue. The Allianz Football League kicks off on this Sunday when Limerick travel to Sligo to play the locals in the 1st round best of luck to local man John Brudair who is team manager and his backroom team.

G.A.A. Lottery: The numbers drawn in the Green Bar on January 17th were 3, 5, 7 and 30. There was no winner of the €9.500 jackpot. There were three winners of the Match Three prize each received €35. They were Ita Browne Ratheenagh, Anna Deely Glenquin and Gerard Meaney Dromcollogher. The €50 lucky dip winners were J.J. Murphy Broadford and Tom Reidy Dromcollogher. Next week’s Jackpot is €9,700 (win or share) and the Match Three prize is €100. Tickets are available at all business premises or from any committee member.

Youth Club: A youth club is starting in the Broadford Enterprise Centre. Unit one is the place to be at the enterprise centre every Friday evenings from 8pm to 9.15. The club caters for ages 12 plus. Parents must attend first night only to fill in forms etc.

Cards at Neenans: Two teams shared the prizes in the weekly 45 drive at Neenans on Monday night January 20 with 8 games each. They were Brendan Kelly Ashford & Tom Ahern Ratheenagh and Monica Neenan Glen Road & Tim Burke Knockglass. The spot prize was won by Jim O’Connor Ballinlonig & Timmy Murphy Springfield. The raffle winners were 1st €35 Tom Ahern Ratheenagh, 2nd prize €20 Pat Gilbourne Kilmeedy and 3rd prize €10 Paddy Duggan Broadford.

Broadford Playground:A public meeting has been organized for this Thursday night at 8.20pm in the Community Centre to discuss the upcoming fundraising Skydive for the Playground. Parents are asked to attend to discuss this event and other upcoming events in more detail
